high level chess means you have memorized openings to a very high level of detail and that you have excellent foresight about a universe in full of pieces that move in very specific ways

learning chess up to a certain extent teaches foresight applicable to the real world. after a while it's a rabbit hole.

poker teaches you to detach yourself from situations emotionally...so, you can't think about the money you're losing or winning, you have to concentrate on making the right decisions regardless of outcome.

it also teaches you to think about things in the long-term. sure, you might have only a 20% shot of winning the pot, but if the price is right, it's the proper choice in the end to make that play.

I also find that poker teaches you dissect people so that you can take advantage of their personalities. This is very helpful in a cutthroat kind of way.

by variance I just mean the vagaries of uncertain outcomes in the real world, i.e. how basic fluctuations in expectation can have huge consequences in every imaginable area of life. For me, at least, it's a philosophy that underpins all of my thinking.

i like poker, but the skills it teaches are worthless in real life.

magic: the gathering, not flame.

-you have to predict market trends to not get fuct by ridiculous price increases and thus pick up sleeper hits.

-analyzing a shifting metagame and choosing the right archetype, list, and sideboard tech for the appropriate time is a very difficult skill.

-drafting and learning to both send and receive signals is pretty damn complex as well as evaluating picks on the fly based on signals and your selected cardpool.

-learning how to live with yourself doing something so goddamn nerdy will prepare you for whoring yourself out to partners/bosses.

Chess teaches you to be good at recognizing chess patterns on a board.

Life is knowing, reading, and influencing people. And being likeable.

So, game-wise, I'd imagine it would be some sort of scavenger hunt.

Go, obviously. And maybe backgammon.

Go teaches you self-discipline and requires tremendous patience and foresight.

Because it is far more based in the luck of dice rolls, backgammon teaches you to remain stoic and resolute in the face of adversity.
