are we adding CO2 to the atmosphere? Yes

Is CO2 a greenhouse gas? Yes

Is that likely to change the climate, initially warming but also possibly triggering an ice age? Yes and maybe

Does driving an electric car meaningfully change the above? No

Does using CFL lightbulbs meaningfully change the above? No

Is there anything we can do to stop the above? Not without killing more than half the worlds' population and going back to subsistence living for the survivors.

Would such an attempt lead to massive global conflict causing results that are likely worse for humanity than climate change? Yes

I think there is some debate over just how bad the consequences of global warming/climate change are, but it is certainly real. I just don't think there is anything we can realistically do to stop/prevent it, and we're better off not needlessly hampering economic growth, if for no other reason than so we are wealthy enough in the future to put dykes around NYC, etc.

the point of my response wasn't to quibble over the 99% claim - my point was that I didn't dispute that human induced climate change is real

What I do dispute are any claims of (1) how bad climate change will be on net (we just don't know) and (2) that climate change can realistically be stopped (I don't think it can)

Please tell me how you plan to bring the emissions of the world, including China, India and other developing countries, to 0 while removing excess CO2 currently in the atmosphere

TL;DR If we were to release 250 billion more tons of excess CO2 then halt all carbon emissions, global temperatures would rise a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius (generally agreed to be an acceptable rise). Then, over an extremely long timeline, trees, algae, seas, etc., would slowly absorb the excess carbon.

First, "Simulation suggests that even halting carbon emissions could still leave the Earth’s average temperature rising" supports my claim that we can't stop climate change.

Second, how do we stop the world from emitting CO2 once we hit your pre-set limit?

Uh yeah, rising up to a maximum level of 2 degrees higher than our current temperature. So in the short term, yes the temperatures would continue rising after we halt, but we could still avoid catastrophic climate change.

And regarding your second question, idk how to make it happen politically. Maybe outlaw the burning of fossil fuels? Maybe call on the leaders of every world religion to ostracize those who burn fossil fuels? Maybe develop some technology (e.g., genetically engineered algae) that offsets carbon emissions? I don't know the best way to go about it, I'm just saying that if we can limit ourselves to only increasing carbon levels by 250 billion more tons, it is scientifically possible to prevent catastrophic climate change.

the majority of C02 emissions aren't from humans, genius. you would have to outlaw volcanic eruptions, forest fires, cow flatulence, etc.

(literal retard)

(1) It's CO2, not C02. The O is Oxygen. It's not a number.

(2) Carbon dioxide levels were constant from 0 AD up until the industrial revolution. The amounts of carbon released by the natural world are roughly equivalent to the amounts of carbon absorbed by the natural world.* It wasn't until the industrial revolution that carbon levels begin to rise appreciably. If humans stop burning fossil fuels, carbon levels will stop rising. If you don't understand a concept that simple, I simply cannot engage you in debate.

*I understand that carbon levels do fluctuate due to natural forces if you've looking at timespans of tens of thousands of years... but that's irrelevant to the current discussion. Natural fluctuation bounces from 200 to 300 ppm, and the cycles occur over a span of tens of thousands of years. What's happening now is that we've jumped from about 300 ppm to 397 ppm in a mere 100 years. That's an unprecedented high, reached at an unprecedented rate, and it has nothing to do with cow farts or forest fires.

not believing in anthropogenic warming might be the most PROLE thing ever. look at the overwhelming data and the funding of scientists/politicians that deny it. every other country in the world is debating what to do about it, not whether it's happening. america is doomed.
