TL;DR If we were to release 250 billion more tons of excess CO2 then halt all carbon emissions, global temperatures would rise a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius (generally agreed to be an acceptable rise). Then, over an extremely long timeline, trees, algae, seas, etc., would slowly absorb the excess carbon. |

And regarding your second question, idk how to make it happen politically. Maybe outlaw the burning of fossil fuels? Maybe call on the leaders of every world religion to ostracize those who burn fossil fuels? Maybe develop some technology (e.g., genetically engineered algae) that offsets carbon emissions? I don't know the best way to go about it, I'm just saying that if we can limit ourselves to only increasing carbon levels by 250 billion more tons, it is scientifically possible to prevent catastrophic climate change. |

(1) It's CO2, not C02. The O is Oxygen. It's not a number.
(2) Carbon dioxide levels were constant from 0 AD up until the industrial revolution. The amounts of carbon released by the natural world are roughly equivalent to the amounts of carbon absorbed by the natural world.* It wasn't until the industrial revolution that carbon levels begin to rise appreciably. If humans stop burning fossil fuels, carbon levels will stop rising. If you don't understand a concept that simple, I simply cannot engage you in debate.
*I understand that carbon levels do fluctuate due to natural forces if you've looking at timespans of tens of thousands of years... but that's irrelevant to the current discussion. Natural fluctuation bounces from 200 to 300 ppm, and the cycles occur over a span of tens of thousands of years. What's happening now is that we've jumped from about 300 ppm to 397 ppm in a mere 100 years. That's an unprecedented high, reached at an unprecedented rate, and it has nothing to do with cow farts or forest fires. |
