The SPLC is definitely the organization with the most expertise in hate groups in the country and it definitely seen as the authority in that regard. Even the FBI and whatnot frequently cite to SPLC.
The vast majority of groups the SPLC classifies as hate groups are groups that everybody would agree are hate groups. Where it gets a bit controversial is anti-gay-rights groups. SPLC applies the same standards to anti-gay bigotry that they do to bigotry based on gender or race. The vast majority of groups that advocate against the rights of gay people are not classified as hate groups by SPLC, but those that fabricate studies, call for violence, portray gay people as subhuman, etc., do make the list.
You should definitely steer far clear of any group that SPLC considers a hate group. |
