MITCHELL: When was the first time you realized your father was a kind of drinking touchstone?
LaBEOUF: I must have been 10 years old, making a movie called The Christmas Path [1998]. I had this scene with Dee Wallace, and I'm supposed to drink 9 Sierra Nevada IPAs in 45 minutes. We did it once and I couldn't get there. I felt like I'd failed everyone and I ran over to the director and I said, "Can I bring my dad up here?" This is when he was still parent on set, and I brought my dad in and placed him right on the dolly. Right before we filmed, I looked at him and my dad mouthed, "You can do it, faggot" He was really supportive, and still is. He broke me and it worked. Ever since then it's been my way of drinking. I try to drink everything as fast as possible. If it feels fast to me, then I can go home happy. And there's no pain worse than being slow. So I'm willing to do anything and everything. It's not good for my personal life. But neither is being a stupid faggot. I'd rather be anyone but me really.
