An experienced IP partner in the south can pretty easily bill $500+ an hour. If he bills 1650 hours a year and collects 85% of that, that's $700k in revenue a year. So they probably do pretty well for themselves.

In my market inhouse as a mid level (~5-6) will net you about low 200s all in (larger company). 250K after 8-9 years of total experience. 300K+ when you are a "senior" counsel.

sounds reasonable for a very small shop with a steady flow of work. I think you can make more as you leverage and hire more agents/juniors to do work for you. I am guessing for large IP boutiques (i.e., > 10), partners can make closer to 400-500K, maybe more at bigger places. But you aren't going to 1mil+ unless you are doing litigation or work for a very large firm.

depends on the in-house. IP in-house in Cali pays 200+ easily, but around DC area and east coast it's super-competitive because there aren't too many tech companies and so the salaries are deflated to 150-170 base (assuming you can even get a job).

You aren't making all that much off associates based on those numbers. Maybe 100-150K per associate, divided among the partners. I also doubt many of these firms "collect" 500K per partner as suggested.

Small firms with 4 associates and two partners don't eat 300k per associate on rent and salary.

They also don't tolerate attorneys, partners included, who don't bill. If they do they die.

The numbers I showed are not a stretch and are realistic for a small boutique.

You asked for how to leverage a few associates to make 300k-400k per partner? That's how. Get clients that pay and it works.

It's pretty hard to get a decent IP associate for less than 200K + 75K overhead.

I don't think your typical IP firm with 2 partners / 4 associates is getting clients that are paying partners $500K a year in billables. The budget pressure in prosecution is tremendous, unless those partners are literal machines that can churn out work product like robots.
