For the Cravath lock-step peer group (i.e., most of Vault 20), I predict the same as last year. Although some are saying as much as a 25-50% bump from last year. What are others hearing or feeling?

Mid-level is generally 4 to 6 year and 7 to 8 is senior associate. General feeling is that there's a small bump overall but mid and seniors get a little bigger bump since ite decimated future partner ranks, in house hiring a bit more these days etc

My prediction is it stays the same if only because CSM has not, as least based on the league tables, had a remarkably good year and none of S&C, Skadden, STB are likely to lead given CSM has given them cover to lowball for a few years now (DPW never leads and none of the other firms that pay market bonuses are considered possible leaders). M&A is way up this year, but CSM has lost some of the pie is my sense. M&A drives a lot of the other practices and is the best barometer.

That was true before ITE, but litigation is a huge percentage of revenues (some more than 50% if you believe citi) at a lot of top firms. It is easier to keep litigators working high hours than corporate people due to the ebbs and flows of deals and the market generally.

Senior associates at top firms aren't really fungible. There is a big difference between the performance of a star and the worst associate on the floor in terms of hours, reliability, and work quality. (Shitty associates almost never get to work with the top partners, do depositions, run deals, etc.) There are also transaction costs to replacing associates like recruiter fees, lost time/hours while these new people learn relatively complicated internal systems/procedures, potential client issues, etc. The problem is that the "professional" nature of biglaw-including ethics/conflicts rules-makes quitting without another sure thing lined up nearly impossible. I guess this is all to say associates aren't fungible, but that they would have to be pretty severely underpaid before they considered walking out.

I agree V20s keep a lot of shitty senior associates around (who make them plenty of money), but that is because the good ones are vital to keeping the place running and it actually is hard to replace them on short notice/not worth the cost of making a mistake and letting a good one go. You never see the shitty ones working with top partners and a good senior associate leaving can actually piss off a partner as they need people who have experience managing their work flow.

it is amazing to me looking through this thread how standards have changed. now a ~$50k bonus for a c/o of 2007 would be considered a nice bump. in 2007, c/o of 2006 got paid a $45k bonus and the senior associates were getting $110k.

Law360, San Diego (October 27, 2014, 3:50 PM ET) -- While BigLaw profits are slowly climbing in 2014, most associates should expect their year-end bonuses to stay flat, experts say, as lateral hiring remains sluggish and top firms aren't forced to pull out the stops to retain talent.

Legal industry consultants say the market is the healthiest it's been since the financial crisis but there is still an overabundance of law school graduates, making it difficult for associates to squeeze extraordinary bonuses from their firms.

My firm is understaffed as it is and literally everyone is looking for a new job. If bonuses are the same this year that they've always been it's going to be a disaster for the partners. On the other hand, I'm not sure even big bonuses would convince most people to stay.

I'm not feeling a sense from firms that there's a need to raise bonuses this year. I don't see Cravath doing it - their business hasn't rebounded as much as some other firms and I don't think they have an appetite to be aggressive. There are a handful of other firms that could try to jump them, but the other firms know that their direct competitors will match so it will just cost them all money and won't give them a competitive advantage. There's also still a feeling that associate comp got raised too far in 2007, right before the financial collapse, and it will still be a while before inflation erodes it back down to a more reasonable level. (Reasonable being in the eye of the beholder, of course.) And the biggest driver is that supply still exceeds demand, which will limit attrition and keep a steady supply of new associates coming in. All of this says to me that Cravath will announce bonuses at the same level as last year and everyone else (except the usual outliers - e.g., Wachtell and Boies) will fall into line.

I said that above. The associate attrition problem won't be solved with more money. There are NO juniors or mid levels especially in corporate. People who survived ITE are rare as hens teeth and any 2-5th year can pick up the phone and have another job in an hour if they have too much work or are unhappy. No amount of money is going to fix that. Only when the bigger SA classes of the last couple years work through will it fix itself and then only if some current mid/seniors stay.
