It's bimodal but mostly idiots. There are more attorneys who struggle with affect vs effect than competent ones.
To the OP, JAG does not improve job prospects for most. People change jobs all the time because that's the way it's been done forever, which means dumb people are always learning a new thing. Worst possible combination for effective representation. Also means civilians won't hire because you won't have meaningful skills. It shows when any DoD job opens. Retired colonels apply for jobs as civilians that new attorneys do in legal assistance. It's pathetic.
Being a college athlete is more important than going to a good school. Commanders need competent advice but most are ROTC morons who don't know any better. Don't get me started on prior enlisted. West Point folks are usually much better.
JAG is for people who don't care about the quality of legal work. Seriously, I've received much more praise for my fitness than my legal acumen.
With the wars ending, the garrison mentality is creeping in. This means ticky tacky stuff becomes more important. For instance, if you stayed late all last week and your work is done by 1630, leaving early is out of question. Also, as noted above, PT is important, but you have to PRT, which is the worst workout ever.
I could rant for many more paragraphs. If you want to serve, go combat arms for a few years. If no one else will hire you, then you can think about JAG.
And for anyone reading this far, the interview matters a lot. Playing sports matters. Wanting to be a leader matters. Being a good lawyer does not matter at all.
