"mo money for dem programs"

So the right question to ask is whether a few billion dollars in the higher education budget could be spent on better things than an interest rate cut. The money could expand Pell Grants for low-income students, which cover much less of the cost of higher education than they used to. Or it could double or triple or quadruple the size of the federal work-study program, which benefits students both financially and educationally. Or it could create incentives for states to spend more on their own public colleges and universities — perhaps the best way to drive down the price of tuition for everyone.

All of that is a better way to deal with student debt than making it slightly cheaper to take out a student loan.

The thing is, increasing money for Pell Grants is a good idea but only if the money is actually going to real schools. There needs to be a massive day of reckoning for many schools (both profit and 'not-for-profit').

Summary: we should continue to destroy the middle class by financing free college for the poorest at the expense of middle class kids who take loans.

if we scrapped governments student loans altogether, universities would cost $10000 per year. the downside is that most students would have to go without multi-million dollar fitness centers and 5 star dining halls.

without guaranteed gubmint loans/subsidies, money is really only coming in from 4 places: parents, private lenders, alumni (and other) donations, and sports programs.

1) Queer Latina Studies students' families don't have the money to pay $10,000 per year upfront.

2) private lenders won't loan $40,000 to a 1100 SAT (or whatever the modern equivalent is) student going into Queer Latina Studies.

3/4) alumni donation/sports program money is going to be invested in things that offer a return on that money, such as giving scholarships to gifted athletes and bribing awesome professors with tenure.

man, you really have to break things down for libs. stop living in fantasyland and these things become obvious.

true. if student loans are purely on a commercial basis and "studies" include all 7000 or whatever colleges it must be expensive. But would not, say, a medical student or a Stanford UG be able to get cheaper rates?

but if the market for student loans is not free now, why are rates so high in these low-interest-rate economic times?

if something is government run as opposed to market run the government is free to set and differentiate rates as they socially or otherwise wish

What is your point? Rates arent high enough to compensate gubmints for defaults yet they are too high to be a wise investment for 70% of majors.

Yes, and/or larger loan values. I can't say that's a bad thing.

It's ludicrous that universities charge the same, or nearly the same except for minor fees, for a STEM major as for shitliberal arts. What bank would really risk money on a shitliberal gender bender social change BA degree being paid back.
