total shithold. white trash and big box stores. if you want portland, move to portland. but that's an even rougher slog where jobs are concerned.

that's the conundrum man.

hate to say it because i'm not a fan, but TX seems pretty credited these days. your purchasing power there is so much better than almost anywhere else in the country, and employment markets are really strong in any city where you'd want to live. the metroplex and san antonio have actual culture and it's not as hick as you might think. both seem to be full of transplants.

That's actually where I am now. It's not awful but I'm burned out on it. Also want some natural beauty. Guess I'm stuck.

You're right that it's not hick the way it's portrayed in popular culture. And I guess I'm spoiled by the relatively decent job market here compared to rest of country.

olympia - ever been there? no reason to live there unless you work for the state. the downtown area is a rusting mid-century wreck.

bellingham - see below

sequim - do you actually know anything about this place? it's a prairie full of tract homes and everybody shops at the one walmart in port angeles. you really think this is a nice place to live? i mean, i guess they do have a small movie theater and 4-5 OK restaurants.

seattle is a truly great city, but the legal market outside of shitlaw is really tough sledding and it's getting crazily expensive. too much growth over the last two decades.

Bellingham

Anacortes

gig harbor is the best place either if you mentioned, but anywhere in the south sound offers the same access to the outdoors.

bellingham is very small

anacortes is a vacation town with zero amenities for normal people

gig harbor is suburb of tacoma. tacoma is doable but it's not for everyone.

north bend - lol - are you just throwing darts at a wikipedia page?

port townsend is the tiniest place of all. he's talking about moving to a state cold. you need to find a stable job, housing, and have some kind of social infrastructure around you.

you asked where I would want to make a life. not for someone lookin to live in a city, but these places are all fucking great if you can find work.

and lol at anacortes having no amenities. all kinds of suburban type shit within 20 minutes one way and 30 the other. its the most 180 small town to live in in the country if you want a variety of outdoors access. thousands of acres of protected forest within the city, most underrated national park in the US is an hour away, deception pass is right there, ferry to Victoria, etc
