Hitchens was clearly the brightest as well as the most well read and spoken, imho. Dennett was obviously the dullard of the group and seemed most inclined to raising his voice as though loud meant right. He was also the poorest talker and the least precise--by a mile--in his use of language. Dawkins spoke well enough; in fact his voice was highly agreeable and even soothing, although he did not seem comfortable taking the lead on many subjects but rather hung back, looking cautious and timid most of the time.

This brings me to Sam Harris. He seemed very close to Hitchens both in terms of the breadth of his reading (supply of ready knowledge) and his argumentative tactics. On a relevant side note, Hitchens was aggressively trying to provoke Sam, imho, really laying into Israel and characterizing the Jews' adoption of some blood sacrifice two thousand years ago as though that were the key turning point in humanity's descent into moral poverty, or some such tenuous seeming claim. Well, Harris did not rise to the bait to my surprise, but he did deploy what I consider to be a hallmark trait of Jews arguing even among themselves: which is to answer a question by asking a more complex question of their interrogator.

Whenever I hear of someone in an argument who, suddenly, is demanding to see data as proof of some claim their opponent has made, and the one is making this demand after no formal rules of order had been laid down nor allowances made for such trivial interruptions beforehand, I recall the ancient tactic of dealing with an opponent's particularly powerful line of reasoning by calling into question some aspect of it upon which his larger thrust does not depend.

It sounds like this little pipsqueak at your dinner table may have tried to ambush you with his attempted use of some variant of that tactic, only it was his turn to get got and that, sadly for him, is what he did, get got.

my reaction was accurately described above. apparently to some people its unstable to look in someone's eyes with the ice grill and inform them that they will not be speaking to you anymore.
