I cannot convey in words how life changing quitting biglaw is.

Took a new job (which, to be fair, is a 180 job) and my life is completely different. I don't fear going to work any more. I like the people I work with. I get to go home and have dinner with my wife and not feel like this a rare thing. I am not constantly working remotely to try to "get ahead" of the pile of shit that is on my desk. I don't have to waste 2 hrs every weekend billing my time.
From a personal level, I always thought I was pretty laid back even in big law. Even so, since quitting, my anger levels have gone down, and my relationship with my family has improved. I have reconnected with my school friends who I had lost contact with since I joined biglaw. Basically, I feel like a normal person. Someone on here wrote about how quitting biglaw they felt like that pushed back their first heart attack by 20 years. That's exactly how I fell.
I stayed in biglaw for a long time - I basically needed a partner who I had worked my ass off for to tell me that I was "difficult to work with" as a setup for NO BREAKFAST to realize how bad my job was. I was always the first one to think that people who complained about biglaw were just lazy / immature / never had another job / ungrateful bitches. Now I understand. The job is tortuous. In order to make partner, you need to become a certain type of person. Yes, they pay you well, but you are selling your soul. The money really isn't worth it.
Some of you will be like "oh you were shown the door LOL I am going to make it and it is going to be great to laugh at all the bitches who didn't." I feel sorry for you. I hope you figure it out quicker than I did.

Fortuitously, a group in my industry at a client of mine was looking for a senior lawyer to join in a business/structuring role. It was exactly the type of job I was looking for. I then got super lucky that people in my network knew people in this group and were able to put in a good word for me. The timing was brilliant. I was worried I would have to play out the 2 years and then counsel game, but luckily I was able to bounce. No one at my biglaw firm made much of an effort to retain me after i told them about the job offer, which only confirmed how hopeless my situation was there.
It's 180 because its exactly what I wanted to do, I am technically not a lawyer anymore, and because it pays well. The people I work for are crazy but its all good. Pay was initially a major bump from biglaw, but with the new bonus scale its now only a modest bump. |

Making partner is all about impressing the right people and having the right partners fight for you. I impressed who I was working with but their business unit was not profitable enough and they had no sway with the rest of the firm. So basically they needed to invest reasons why I wasn't good enough for the job, because they couldn't admit that there was no chance because of business reasons. |
