If you want an in-house job at a Seattle tech behemoth, Microsoft is the more desirable option (although I don't know how the recent round of layoffs has effected LCA).

Amazon has been doing quite a bit of attorney hiring lately. But I echo the sentiment of others. I have gotten the feeling that it is not a very positive place to work, in terms of hours and environment. I also gather the compensation isn't so great, and neither are the benefits. For example, I hear bonuses are non-existent. Additionally, the employee insurance contribution is higher than average. In sum, the company is very cheap with regards to its employees, from what I could gather. I passed on applying to the two positions I saw, that I was qualified for.

Your experience at a particular company will depend on the corporate culture of that company. If the groups/divisions you work with/for, are hard working or have a toxic environment, then you should expect the same as inhouse counsel for that company. Amazon is reputed to have a strongly negative environment, and if true, one should expect the same as inhouse counsel.

Amazon lures in people with money and not much else. Expectations and pressure are high, employees are relatively expendable, and benefits are ttt, but they'll offer surprisingly high comp once stock bonuses are factored in. The high turnover also make climbing the ranks easier. It's more like a middle ground between biglaw and typical inhouse. You keep the hours and pressure, but also the pay and advancement ops while losing the billable hours and unpredictable fire drills.

My scoop was that the base salary was lower than average and the stock awards brought you back up to a comparable inhouse position at a large company. But who would want that? More base upfront is almost always better. And Amazon's stock is grossly overvalued, so you may get FUCKED OVER on that front as a new hire. Plus their revenue and profitability have been declining, which doesn't bode well for someone looking for any degree of job security.

One of my sources who most directly complained about this (being told for years they would hire more people, but it never happened) is a habitual complainer, so I take that with a grain of salt. But I have a little bit of direct experience that is consistent with this analysis, and I have heard consistent accounts from others as well.

I don't necessarily think it is a bad thing from the company's perspective in terms of efficiency/leanness, but I don't think I would want to work that way.

This is the constant refrain of any inhouse attorney at a big company who doesn't build good relationships with higher ups in the business. It's easy for inhouse to suck if all you ever do is field emails from worker bees who are getting screamed at, and have no access to the people who can actually fix the problem.

I know three lawyers there.

They work hard but NOT biglaw hard. Think 9:30-7 or so.

They make almost as much money as biglaw for their class level. a lot more money than Microsoft.

The stock options only become a significant part of compensation after the third year.

The corporate culture is not great, but there is no billing either.

It's also a pretty good brand name to go somewhere else. So the downside of the bad culture is that you might get a bottom half review and have your advancement limited more than it would be in a less competitive culture. But that doesn't mean your career is in limbo and could implode if you don't catch a break like it does for people getting nobreakfasted.
