Last weekend, Ted Cruz forced the Senate to stay in session all day on a Saturday — and arguably made it easier for Senate Democrats to confirm 24 presidential nominees, including a new surgeon general. Cruz' fellow Republicans were, to say the least, not pleased.
This isn't the first time Cruz has ticked off his Senate GOP colleagues. But it might be the first time he's apologized for it.
At the Senate Republicans' weekly lunch, according to Politico, Cruz "offered the apology in unsolicited remarks, saying that he regretted if any of his colleagues' schedules were ruined by his maneuvering." |

His whole purpose is to fire up the base and take positions other Republicans wouldn't. This helps Republicans in voting because the vast majority of people who vote for them honestly don't care about the shutdown or Obama's confirmations. BUT, these same voters would be FURIOUS if Republicans actually openly said, the average voter isn't informed enough or intelligent enough to understand this stuff at the time, much less care about it 6 months, 12 months, 2 years later, so we can do it, and then these same individuals would refuse to vote for them. Basically, Republicans (and Cruz) can do literally anything except for insult the intelligence of their (very dumb) base. So, we get this weird dance where Ted Cruz generally improves Republican results in the election, and therefore everyone wants him there, but they have to act like he's an idiot and say he screwed up or it would imply that their base is actually so stupid that the people do support this stuff or at least are neutral, which no intelligent person would ever support. That's just because no rational person who claims to be concerned about debt, deficit, the continuing existence of the US would take an action that could hurt our credit rating. US debt is the lifeblood of our economy (and affects a lot of the global economy). That's the one thing that could actually put the US in a hole it couldn't get out of.
And that's even ignoring the cost of screwing over people's jobs, hurting the economy, stopping basically all federal research, etc. |
