Depends on the context. Rule of thumb is for fashion, construction, and architecture, use "from." For food, horticulture, and racing, use "than." Anything else is at your discretion.

So:

* His multi-hued Chesterfield coats were different from season to season.

* He knew upon tasting the Jovian soil that this meal would be different than the rest.

* There on the surface of the egg, emerging from its broken shell, was a creature so different from / than [see here how either use is acceptable] what had been planned two years before that the Committee chairman gave a surprised shout.
