And it's relative to what our peers/friends are doing v. theirs. I don't compare my life to true shitlaw, bank tellers, or flyover office drones. In comparison to PhDs, engineers, doctors, dentists, finance, startup bros, nonprofits, people whose jobs seem to be travelling, F500 management programs, etc., it's conceivable that I could have made some better choices in college.

Six year biglaw bro here, now off to the promised land of inhouse.

I bitched about biglaw when I was there, and I've bitched about it here too. There are parts of it that are truly 120. If you've read this board, I presume you're familiar with the complaints. Now, objectively speaking, biglaw associates have it pretty good-- none of them would trade to work the same hours in worse conditions as shitlaw lawyers. But it's equally true that shitlaw lawyers objectively have it pretty good too-- none of them would trade to work 80 hours as a cook at a MFH restaurant and clear $30k. But it's equally true that restaurant cooks have it pretty good... etc. and this chain of logic leads you all the way until you get to the poorest person in the world and nobody can complain except peasants in Turkmenistan.

There's nothing wrong with commiserating with similarly situated people-- it's probably the most emotionally healthy thing the average XO'er does.

Ppl are not flaming when they bitch about BIGLAW. Face it a TTT LS wants BIGLAW cause he has no other options to make money. Hell even a t14 student is in the same boat. We are all brainwashed that this is the only honorable way to practice law and make money. It's insane.

BIGLAW is inhuman. It is a horrible profession. The neverending quest to bill more hours is bullshit. The work is boring. You aren't even practicing law. The other ppl are like prison wardens and slaves, they have lost all sense of humanity cause of years of BIGLAW toil.

Face it, lawyers are risk adverse shit. Engineers and CS fucks are anti social fucks too but tehy don't put up with this shit. They try to start businesses and innovate even dorks from fucking India do.

The entire profession is shit. Now that I am solo I realize its all fraud and lies. Fuck kikes.

CR. Take a step back and try to imagine how bad a job has to be to make a 28 year old with 100,000 dollars of debt walk away from a job that pays 190,000 for something paying less than half that or maybe with nothing lined up at all.

Everything is relative. But i've always hated the "other people would kill for that job" line. Gotta be true to your own self, bro. If it isnt for you, it isn't for you. Basically what your saying is that your job is prestigious so you should like it.

I wasn't in NYC, so I've had other jobs where I had to work as much as I worked in biglaw, save like the six worst weeks I had in 3.5 years. It's not the difficulty or volume of work by itself; it's the personalities and the culture, which is a product of a fundamentally fucktarded ownership structure and now a severely wounded business model. What's maddening is the baseline level of stress, which is mainly caused by everyone constantly worrying that they will be stabbed in the back with the slightest bit of pretext. The closest this bort comes to describing it is ONE|WRONG|MOVE.

It's all that but the unpredictability and inability to plan, too. Even if you work for people who are toward the nice side, there are still emergencies, they just say "sorry" somewhere in the email that tells you to cancel something (while you're junior enough to think that you can still make plans).

I don't even bother trying to make plans on a weeknight now or Friday before 8. Concerts, games, etc. -- it's a few times/year thing, including anniversary and wife's birthday, otherwise it's just not worth the stress of knowing that there's a significant chance that I'll be unacceptably late or have to cancel altogether.

Nothing is sacred: Weekend morning calls, kick-off calls on Sunday afternoons, ridiculous times to accommodate clients in Asia or Europe, etc.

You have to have an incredibly supportive and flexible gf/wife to make it work.

They all look the same to rising 2Ls at OCI, other than Cravath and Wachtell and then the obvious shit at the other end that couldn't even fill their interview spots (this was pre-ITE).

The other thing that I didn't fully appreciate was the lifestyle difference of going into a service area v. being an M&A/CapMkts/Corp bitch.

does it pay NYC market?

because the unpredictability he describes is very real. And i also don't like making weekday plans because of the stress of worrying about making it out.

There is such a divergence between the dread of getting that "new deal" email on saturday afternoon and partner's gleeful reply to the client that we can speak sunday am at 9am.

His experience is more typical of v10/NYC/striver associate they're trying to burn out. Since I was never particularly "well regarded" I didn't get pwn3d like that all the time, but I think the vast majority of people who spend any amount of time in biglaw have at least a couple stories along those lines. It's also pretty demotivational to see the associate who they clearly love getting his life totally ruined. I was pretty close with several guys who were the golden boys staffed as lead bitch on every deal for the big rainmaker partners. They were miserable and complained all the time about how they were never going to have time to meet a girl and date seriously. Even if they happened to meet someone the one stray night every three weeks that they didn't work they would never have a chance to sustain it enough that it could turn into something serious. This made mediocrities like me happy that we weren't doing better in the eyes of the higher ups, which is just perverse.

There's always shitty anecdotes or crazy times, like before a dispositive filing or ramping up for trial/arbitration. Litigation is much more predictable re: hours than deal-making.

Guessing it's a combination of hours and boring work. Thankfully both vary by practice group and firm. I worked 9-7:00 (no weekends) before law school and don't find biglaw to be much worse, aside from the occasional late night or working weekend. And the work is actually far more interesting, though my experience may not be representative of the experiences of my peers, even in the same group.

yea i think ultimately a job is tolerable/enjoyable if it is: 1) boring but low stress so fuck it; or 2) stressful but interesting/rewarding so worth the dedication and sacrifice. To me, big law is the perfect shit storm of boring and stressful, and the result is really tough to deal with day in and day out, with no end/exit ops in sight.
