i do IP lit and i enjoy it.
i can't give you much guidance as far as other corp practice groups. i just did general corporate work for about 4 weeks of my summer. the people i know who do bank finance say that it's boring as fuck.
i think you're better off picking the practice area you like the most if you're going to be doing it for 60-80 hrs a week, but that's me.

i don't think the field is dying (though i'm obviously biased).
if you're going to a good firm i think that you will be ok. tertiary firms that jumped in "me-too" style towards the end of the boom may have trouble, but the good firms will be fine.
long story short, i think at most we'll see a modest shift, not a systemic shift in the practice area. a modest contraction wouldn't be a huge deal at, e.g., K&E who won't have trouble continuing to attract the top work.
i've also been involved in general lit and could easily transition more of my time there with partners who like me.
personally, i like doing lit and would be miserable doing corporate. to me, even if i'd been aware of the suddenly dominate CW on xo that you need to pick a practice group that will allow you to "cop inhouse" in 3-4 years, i wouldn't have chosen to do something i hated just to make that more available.
if you have experience in both and like both, it's easier to make in-house options a tie breaker or down the road consideration.
just my two cents. good luck with the decision.
