grinding away to get a high gpa in a useless liberal arts subject (but a relatively hard one) so i could go to grad school.

then i realized grad school was a debt-trap, and now organize my life around trying to party as though i was in college to make up for lost time.

so pathetic that i fell for this scam. should have coasted with a 3.4 and would be able to actually focus on work now that it matters.

i studied philosophy which is actually difficult and was gunning hard for yls so i could do legal academia.

i pounded adderall and worked harder than i've ever worked before or since--12 hours/day of mental gymnastics that no normal person can do for more than 3-4 hours per day--and had a perfect gpa.

senior year i realized how meaningless this and how adderall was destroying my life, my emotions, and my relationships with other people.

there's no way i can ever grind that hard again without amphetamine salts, so i've been biding my time in salesy tech jobs since because i have no marketable skills. god knows what i'll do when the bubble bursts.

cr. Adderall destroys creativity in favor of extreme attention to detail and rote memorization. That's why I found it helpful to cram for a test but counterproductive to writing papers.

I procrastinate and leave most things to the last minute though I'm able to focus intensely when I have to. I'm pretty sure I don't fall within any clinical definition of ADD. I think adderall just makes anyone better at studying and prob has other beneficial effects for people for whom the drug is intended.

When I tried to write papers on adderall I would end up spending 30 min writing and rewriting each sentence until i thought I got it just right then move on to then next sentence. At the end it would just be a disjointed mess and my eyelids would be twitching as I watched the sunrise.

i'm probably incorporating dead time in between classes, so maybe in terms of hard focus it was more like 9-10 hours/day.

a lot of the extra work wasn't necessary due to diminishing marginal returns and grade inflation, but in my speed-induced obsessiveness i wanted every argument to be crystal clear, with no wasted word.

ha i mean i was generally interested in the topic...i felt a normal level of stress in college but put the extra hours in out of genuine interest...but yea on average each class assigned a 400 or so page book a week, plus response papers, research papers, term papers, midterms, problem sets, finals...all that x4 classes a term... i partied hard too, but just saying, the idea that you could coast through college seems like a joke to me...though ive heard this from several people, including at my T10 law school...but that was not my experience at undergrad, or the experience of any of my piers...

now im a miserable drone 4th year associate at a v30

you played the game wrong.

i took some history classes. they are a joke. your mistake was actually reading the books, as opposed to the intros and conclusions which contain the entire effing argument. rest of the book is just empirical evidence--which is actually what other professional historians will dispute, but when you're an undergrad none of this effing matters.

this is very different from philosophy where the intro and conclusion lay out the overall argument but in order to mount a meaningful critique you have to read most of it.

maybe, maybe not...never really viewed it as a 'game.' was genuinely interested in subject matter, thought i may want to be a historian, thought knowing these details made me a more thoughtful, interesting person, etc. but yea obv didnt read every word in every book...

but even if i had worked slightly less hard, that would have hardly amounted to 'cruising.' there was still plenty of papers and problem sets and exams and shit that required constant attention.

Senior year I became deeply nihilistic, finished with top grades mostly based on reputation. While I still don't drink much, I have taken relatively chill jobs and banged around 30 girls (vs. ~10 in college). Mostly hot ones although there were admittedly some scallywags.

I make close to $100k doing salesy shit for tech companies. Given the shaky market, going to HYS to become a lawyer is not worth the risk (at least until the tech bubble bursts).

I could probably get a full scholarship at a lower T14 but then there's a substantial risk that i'd get no-job pwned and it would all be a massive waste of time.

i had an objectively good outcome for a liberal arts faggot. it's just all so mediocre and depressing.

The higher education system in America is ridiculously fucked up. It is, far and away, the single greatest threat to this country's continued success and well-being, economically, culturally, and politically.

i think i agree with this, but could you explain why you think it's so fucked up and how that leads to self-medication?

If you have a 4.0 why the fuck would you not just do T14 full ride? It's ten times the option that any of your other possibilities are.

i already make close to six figures and am saving $10-15k per year. i'm not good at math but i could probably do an m7 mba if my career really stalled out.

biglaw as a career path is dumb, and that's probably the best possible outcome if i don't do hys.

i wanted to go to law school so i could do legal academia--there was a time (2007, when i started college) when this was a semi-realistic goal if you were a smart grinder. no longer the case really for a white male (not that i'd even want to be part of the racket, now that i see it for what it is).

Most legal academics these days have a PhD. It isn't worth it.

If you got a full ride to CCN it would be a relatively risk-free way to double your earning potential. The question then would be how much worse is Biglaw than the job you have now.

The work is not stimulating at all, except for negotiations which are kind of fun, but I'm friends with everyone I work with (including the founders) and have a lot of flexibility.

It's relatively low pressure since I'm good at the interpersonal stuff the job requires but a lot smarter than most people doing this sort of thing. The ops people love me because the business terms always come in correct and i can handle most of the legal negotiations as well.

I guess it's just down to whether you have any ambitions that $80k isn't going to handle.

The more you are like me--MFH, want kids, want to retire by 50--the more it might be worthwhile. But if your ambitions don't require a ton of money, you might be happier in your current track.

Top salespeople in my industry make $400k + stock options. I'm very junior.

The point of being a lawyer would be that it can be somewhat intellectually stimulating, but from an economic perspective, if I was going to go back to school, an MBA --> consulting would make more sense (except for the debt piece) because I'd have way more options.

Captain Morgan is synonymous with college for me. 2 buddies and I would routinely finish a handle ourselves in the dorm at night before wandering around campus finding parties and chilling with friends. I would get black out and make out with ugly chicks. The next day id wake up hungover and meet my also hungover buddies in the cafeteria for a giant plate of bacon eggs and toast and we would shoot the shit.

Best four years of my life. Now I'm clinically depressed because i sit in an office 10 hours a day typing away like a trained monkey, while social interaction consists of listening to coworkers babble about reality tv or how hard it is to stay up past 10 pm.

you have to be able to sell shit in the right way.

for enterprise sales, the idea of the guffawing, back-slapping, beer-crushing frat boy is a bit misguided. the best salespeople i know are nerds who know how to talk to people.

I didn't say they were. Most people are not good at sales. It takes balls to take control of a meeting with a buyer and make them pay a premium for something. The people I know who are the best at this happen to be kind of nerdy.

LOL, no. Top sales bros are not nerdy. They just know how to talk well, relate well to others and convince people to buy shit. The best sales people are the ones who were popular in high school and had the most friends because they were charismatic and had very likeable personalities

Depends on what you're selling. Top re brokers are probably not nerdy. If we're talking about selling enterprise software to other big tech companies--well, um, yeah, the best people are either hot girls or smart, aggressive nerdy business guys (very different from aspie developer types).

Broing out and building rapport doesn't close big deals with F500 companies. It's not the same as fucking timeshare sales.

depends on your perspective.

the counterparty is an employee of some faceless corporation who doesn't actually care, rather than an actual person, so you get much less pushback on price + you're not directly hurting anyone, so it's much easier to deal with psychologically.

but yeah, there's a lot of bullshitting involved.
