i'm not in a huge rush. but i also don't want to put forth a ton of effort in a hiring process that will take forever. i hear in-house is kind of that way, no? like if i start now, i might have something by next year?
also, am i competitive enough to leave for something besides compliance work? what should i target? am fine leaving nyc or staying. don't have super strong preferences about kind of legal work or industry. just want quality of life, at least six fig comp, and not a dead end career wise. if i don't like the job in 2-3 years, i want to be able to make a move, geographically/industry/etc.

What you have heard is generally correct in my experience. The in-house hiring process can be slow. In my case, it took something like 3 months from my first interview until I formally accepted the job. I went through 4 rounds of interviews with our domestic group and then another meet and greet type of interview with our parent company's legal team. If you would like to be in house by 1Q 2016, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start seriously looking by mid to late this year.
In the meantime, get started by letting a few legal recruiters know that you are exploring a move and that, depending on the circumstances, you are open to various types of positions and that you will not necessarily require top of the market comp.
Are you friendly with any associates who have recently left your firm for in-house gigs? If so, reach out to them and ask them what they did.
Also, I agree with the post above. It's a crapshoot and VERY competitive. My company was overwhelmed by more than 100 applicants for my job.

If you want to go inhouse you need to start sucking up to people you know that are already inhouse and who can introduce you to others who are inhouse/let you know when their department is serious about hiring.
The issue you have now is that you're almost senior enough that they will look at you as being a flight risk if you aren't hired as senior counsel (i.e. the drop off comp-wise to counsel will be too big for you), so you should try to make it happen soon. |
