On your salary if you want a place that isn't a total shithole and/or in a terrible neighborhood, your best bet is Arlington. You can find something decent on the orange line in Courthouse/Ballston/Clarendon. It's not the most hip or relevant place, but there's enough to do that you won't want to kill yourself, and it's an easy commute to downtown.

Clarendon/Courthouse is itself a center of nightlife in the DC area. the crowd skews more state school frat than places like Dupont circle or Logan circle, but a lot of legit partying happens there every single night and the pub crawls every few months are LEGENDARY

if you split a cheap 2BR apartment near Ballston, you are walking distance from Clarendon/Courthouse, and a 20 minute metro ride away from Dupont Circle

plus, you'll be working walking distance from Dupont Circle and short metro distance from Chinatown. just do hang out with coworkers after work until 9 - 10 PM, then take a late orange line train home

This is only partially credited. There is a lot of nightlife in that part of Arlington, but it's all shitty recent UVA/VT grads. Gets old really quick. Still probably the best option for this dude's situation, but don't oversell it.

there is no such thing as a "credited" place to live in the DC area. however, there are areas that are acceptable.

tell me what you are looking for. do you value space? neighborhood demographics? proximity to nightlife? short commute?

alright, slow your roll there hoss

your budget for housing is like $800/mo max. you're looking at being somebody's roommate in a small 2BR apartment. most likely, you are priced out of all the desirable areas you just mentioned, unless somebody has a tiny second bedroom that they are willing to rent out for well below 50% of the rent.

more than likely, you are looking at splitting an apartment with a roommate somewhere on the Orange Line past Virginia Square, or on the Blue Line past Crystal City

Another option that would fit hit budget would be to occupy a gardener's cottage / caretaker's house on a Georgetown property. Arrangements like that open up all the time. It would depend on how well he can garden etc.

This isn't just about living in Georgetown; it's about the opportunity he would have to develop a rich relationship with the land as he gardens in the early morning before he flits to his work and then again on his return in the cool evening hours. And another relationship, while he's at it: caretaking for just the sort of person you've seen in Georgetown, an ailing, aging ambassador from Guyana or Guinea or Ghana; something that would bring them joy and enrich their lives, the relocated wageworker gardener, emerging from his hobbithole to seek the sunshine smile of praise from his peregrine diplomatic charge.

I made only a bit more than this when I first moved to DC. I got a $1500/mo 1 BR apartment in Arlington, which my parents partially subsidized. Then I moved to a 2BR apartment where I was paying like $1300/mo with a roommate. That is still my living situation. I have a bigger bedroom so I pay more than my roommate. No parental subsidy needed since I've gotten hella raises since then.

I would be shocked if you could do better than a studio for $1400. When I was looking for apartments years ago, not even outer areas like Van Ness had studios for that cheap.

Get a roommate. Everyone in DC does it. Realize that much of your socialization will be after work - DC is a huge happy hour scene.

here's the thing to know about socialization in DC

it's not like NYC where people start hanging out at like 9 PM. during the week, DC socialization is all centered around happy hours. a bunch of your coworkers are going to be like "hey, want to go to happy hour at this place in dupont?" or you might get invited to a happy hour for young professionals in your industry in chinatown, or you might get invited to play kickball with people on the national mall at 6:30 PM followed by a happy hour near farragut square

you'll just go straight to these social events after work, and then they'll be done at 9 PM or 9:30 PM at the latest. then you just take the orange line home.

so living out in arlington isn't going to socially isolate you, except possibly on weekends, when all it means is that your friends need to give you 30 minutes of lead time before they text "hey we're hanging out at recessions come join us"

Lol, sort of. Nothing you say is untrue but you leave out a big thing: End of the night, trying to get the girl back to your place, using some sort of trick "Want to smoke weed?" "Let's just get a drink at my place?" She starts to agree and then says "but I have an early morning, where do you live?"And Arlington guys get dinged.

They also get dinged from the start on tinder if they bring it up.

Its not fair BC everything you said is correct, but its true.

I recently saw a 2br in East Capitol Hill for $1,350. Highrise with a Harris Teeter right below and the Blue/Orange line right across the street.

Spend some time on Craigslist.

(5'6 Asian).

I know the exact building he's talking about... Its not the Palisades but its not Anacostia either. Its probably much safer than the U Street Corridor.

I've always trolled for the Cleveland Park and Woodley Park areas. Safe, close to Redline which works well enough during the week for work, still close enough to walk to Dupont and Connecticut has a ton of cabs, Uber, still the Redline on weekends even though it's usually every 20 minutes. You can get much better deals than "downtown" or whatever. I don't think it makes sense to live in NoVA if you're going to want to enjoy DC, but the options outside of NW are limited.

If you're poor try a Capitol Hill basement. Not the best area but it's changing and you can get a good deal.

Taxes are a wash for most people. DC has 1% higher income but VA has a crazy yearly property tax on your car.

The only downside to Arlington is getting lip from fags who live in NOMA about how terrible the suburbs are. 90% of dc has the same or worse nightlife than courthouse- ballston.

be creative and ull be ok
