covington d.c. and cleary gottlieb seem like they could be okay (the latter only if you're a certain kind of person).

location matters a lot more than firm. all the NYC firms are similarly horrible. also be careful of the office that isn't really where it seems to be, i.e., a DC outpost of a NYC firm that gets the bulk of its work from NYC and has partners going between the two offices is going to be similar to a NYC firm, not a DC firm. same goes for clients, if the firm is in LA but its biggest client is a NYC PE fund, then it's probably going to be more like a NYC firm than a LA firm.

I know someone who worked at Morris Nichols for awhile - according to him there's not a lot of job security and it makes working there tense. Of course, that's just the perspective of one person, and I don't know anything about the actual workload.

The following offices are all one of the better compensated and more prestigious offices and groups, each in a certain kind of "chill" market:

Bass Berry Sims - Nashville - probably CRE group

Jones Walker - New Orleans - litigation

Jackson Walker - Austin - oil and gas

Alston & Bird - Charlotte - ??? M&A ???

Latham - OC - securities lit

Does no one on xoxo actually work at a big law firm?

There is no "best firm." The best place to work is whatever firm has a practice group with little work, but not so little work that you will get fired.

Who gives a shit about "Cravath"? Cravath is not a place. It is a conglomerate of literally almost 1000 law partners which are more or less completely separate entities. You may work for a partner with a lucrative practice who expects you to spend your lunches schmoozimg and babysitting clients and then lets you go home at six pm. You may end up working for a partner who makes up random tasks from you to drum up meaninglessness hours, and then make sure you ask him if it's okay to leave before 10 pm just in case he dreams up another way to bill useless hours.

nothing you say is inherently wrong, but, tbf:

<<There is no "best firm." The best place to work is whatever firm has a practice group with little work, but not so little work that you will get fired.>>

totally correct, but this shit changes all the time. what was the case when you accepted your offer in october of 2L isn't gonna be the case 2 yrs later when you start working. it's impossible to predict what will happen that far out.

<<Who gives a shit about "Cravath"? Cravath is not a place. It is a conglomerate of literally almost 1000 law partners which are more or less completely separate entities. >>

also correct, but you don't know who you're going to end up working for.

i agree this is generally sound, except ironically for Cravath, which makes you rotate to a new practice group every 2 or 3 years. so you will work with more of the "firm" than at almost any other firm.

Lol at Quinn.

The fact that they have pay 50% bonuses to people billing 2099 hours would be frightening if the fact that the highest bonus range kicking in at 2700 hours wasn't more frightening.

Highly leveraged firms like Paul Weiss and Cleary (which are in fact more highly leveraged than their peers) are probably better because they are more apt to throw bodies at busy matters, spreading the workload.

the opposite of WLRK essentially where you do the work of 2 associates.

the downside is partnership chances are even worse, but you should write that off anyway as you are trying to do the minimum.

Yeah I think the same is true of skadden NYC. Has a terrible rep but I know some dudes who did their 3/4 years there and got away with a bunch of easy mindless drudgery, generally left by 7 with the random shitty weeks interspersed a few times a year and lateralled to good jobs after. That firm gets shit on here but is respected in most circles.
