welfare is completely different in that it is a subsidy to help poor people who have failed at life, not rewarding behavior. The PE thing is, supposedly, an attempt to incentivize venture capital investment, which, supposedly, leads to economic growth. Welfare, on the other hand, is an attempt to appease poor people so they don't riot, commit crime, etc.
Some republicans seem to think that welfare is an attempt to "help struggling people get back on track" and therefore "we shouldn't give it to people who aren't trying hard enough" or people who will "waste the money" on bad things like drugs. This would include drug users and other undesirables.
It's a stupid position, of course, because welfare is meant to placate and make people less desperate and dangerous. Most people who receive welfare will never work again and everyone knows this. Not giving it to the drug users means you are not giving it to the people who are most likely to be violent if they don't get it. |
