Don't want to hear this bro. I'm leaving biglaw to clerk with the intent to change markets. I probably can't go back to my old biglaw because they're not big fans of clerks and weren't too stoked that I left right after they Lathamed a bunch of bros, leaving even more work for even less associates.

BTW: only people that haven't clerked think that clerking is some silver bullet for your career.

So? Most firms, if they are looking at all, are looking for 1 or 2 new litigation people in my year. Most of their own juniors haven't jumped ship yet.

WHen I was doing SA interviews, I converted some absurd number of screeners to offers because of my grades. I imagine it won't be nearly that easy this time around.

given larger firms have an acceptable range of summers rather than shooting for an exact number i thought it might be nbd to make room for another lit associate who is probably more competent than most of the other summers were.

As a mid level who is leaving to do semi flyover DCT and prestigious COA, this shit is so confusing and disheartening. My grades aren't that mediocre (cum laude MVP) but not great. But usually everyone I talk to says "every clerk I was with found jobs" and then you hear horror stories or sentiments like this. Scares the fuck out of me

This. Especially if you are a COA clerk and not going into appellate lit, the small amount you learned in your year clerking means very little to the 50 largest firms in the world, all of whom you applied to blindly. Your best asset is your judge, and you should be using your judge's connections. Those connections are most likely local. So you're that guy from VA who did law school in CA and went to clerk in IL and now you want a job in NYC? Congrats, you look like every other transient biglaw striver applicant except you cost the firm $50k more to hire.

COA shittigator here, would readily admit that d.ct > COA for lower court trench work, but COA >> no clerkship for new associates, unless the associates did tons of clinic work in school. It's significantly more difficult to delegate anything but the most basic stuff to non-clerks who are 1-3 years out of law school. A brand new associate coming from COA/dct will typically have much better intuition, a greater understanding of good versus bad brief-writing, and ability to discuss strategic issues more intelligently than non-clerks. The differences even out after 3-4 years, but that's for the associates who don't leave voluntarily.

i find this way off base. i see coa people who suck in the trenches and can't deal. their briefs usually are all over. in trial shit you have a million facts and need to narrow it to like 3 things that matter. coa, they have a limited fact universe. just my experience.

i'd rather have a 2nd yr w/ a yr of trench work making outlines and shit than some coa clerk. but rather a coa clerk to some document, monkey, sure.

trial work is hell. there is an ever expanding universe of facts. the hard part is finding the 3 things that matter. coa has a limited universe already, so it's easier to pick out the facts imo.

Yeah, I'd miss out on 2-3 years of biglaw cash. But I'd enjoy my life, get to stay in gr8 shape, do some interesting things, have a job where I wouldn't get pushed out, and have a more compelling story for attempting to go federal in a few years. Seems like a good tradeoff to me.
