People are born with certain levels of intelligence, stick-to-it-iveness, and other personality traits, and parents have limited power to modify these traits.
A lot of parents feel pressured to spend tens of thousands of dollars on their kids each year: private schools, piano lessons, tutors, other bullshit like that. Probably, you can cut out most of these expenses while still having the same or similar outcomes. So its much more affordable for middle class people to have kids than they think, because most of the so-called expenses are actually a complete pile of shit.
