Lots of judges won't even take first years any more. I don't think any SDNY judge does. Lots of NDCA and CDCA judges require prior experience.

The SDNY website has every judge's hiring guidelines. I think some are on oscar but specifically say they're not looking for first years. But yes, you just apply.

I'm taking one as a 4th and may take a CoA as a 5th. You're going to get a lot of conflicting reports here. If you can go back to the firm with bonus, it's likely a cant lose. If not, who knows? Going to be dependent on goals, clerkship, etc.

I'm hoping you're not. I never really thought about not doing it though, shit seems to work out. Also, fuck biglaw usually.

Probably can't get back in. It's a v30-50 firm but they don't really appreciate clerkships. I'd also be fucking them pretty bad--they just stealthed some dudes so I'm fucking slammed, and we have a bunch of briefing deadlines coming up.

I did a circuit clerkship as a first year. This is basically a year of chilling in one of the most 180 cities on earth

Name the 10 most 180 cities in the US. From that list, tell me which you would consider to be among the most 180 on earth. I will tell you if the relevant city is on your list of 10, and maybe the second list if I don't think it outs me.

Yea - that's a different scenario than me. But I am at a somewhat similarly ranked firm that also doesn't really value clerks. Have to think some big fed or DOJ is out there. If not, maybe another biglaw firm and come in with some retarded seniority or a mid law/boutique that is all about clerks.

Fifth year is where you have to decide what you want to do with your career. So if you decide you want to pivot it is the right decision. Think about where you really want to be in 10 years.

This is right. If your goal is to return to your current firm and continue on a path to partnership, doing a clerkship is not a great idea. But if you're looking to transition to a much smaller firm, or to government, or academia, it can be a very good idea.
