what is it? drove a bunch of cars recently, wasnt that impressed. the only fun cars -- A4 2.0, 328i, etc. come with high maintenance costs, etc.

what is the credited move here? want a bit of a smaller car than the accord but dont want to pay an arm and leg for something thats going to require a lot of maintenance. budget is 35k for new or 2-4 yr old used.

What year accord are you driving? In terms of non-luxury cars Accord is easily one of the best mid sized sedans you can get (the only real competition is the camry, with ford/hyundai making moves to catch up). What type of stuff would you like your new car to be better at?

2012

i want bluetooth

i would like better pickup, etc. other than that, im pretty easy-going. drove an IS250 yesterday, nice car, but pretty crappy pickup - even in power mode. only cars that impressed me were the 328i and the a4 2.0 quattro. but im reading horror stories about maintenance, service fees, etc.

and like i said, a bit smaller than accord would be nice.

so if you want great reliability AND low maintenance you are basically ruling out the germans. There's a lot to be said about what's nice about these cars. They are typically funner cars to drive compared to their japanese counterparts, with the exception of Mercedes being not so fun and Infiniti being qutie fun. Also the German cars are cheaper used. So although its true the Japanese cars will be cheaper maintain, they will typically be several thousand more expensive than German cars in the used market. Take a look at what a 2009 BMW 328i costs and what a 2009 Lexus IS 250 costs. So if you still would prefer japanese i can help find what may be ideal.

No, the 335i had a turbocharged engine which is where it got a ton of its power. However, BMW did not do a very good job building these turbos and they had a ton of issues, these issues aren't seen in the 328i because the engines are naturally aspirated (no turbots). The 328i is basically THE most reliable car in BMWs line-up. It's also the highest volume selling and cheapest to maintain (still gonna cost a decent chunk more than your accord, however). It gets to 60 in 6 sec or so. But really you have to drive the car to decide if its enough get up and go for you. Different cars feel different on their way to freeway speeds.

oh i meant last generation 328i, if you're getting a current generation 328i. It will be somewhat less reliable, but i haven't heard any really bad news about the car. So oil changes are gonna run you somewhere between $100-$150. But you don't need them as often as with other cars. Still it's costing you more. Every single piece of thing that needs to be replaced will in general cost more. For instance replacing brakes on your accord might have ran you $500 for all of them, For BMWs that's probably what just the parts will cost you for the full set, then whatever labor costs. I always had the hook up on that, so I have no idea what that should cost. Also, tires will be more expensive. I mean just take whatever it costs to replace on the accord and 2.5x it is what I would do. Because for a lot of the stuff not only does it cost more, but its more frequent.

Then once the warranty runs out you have to worry about repairs, something that seems simple and cheap on an accord can get complicated and expensive on a bmw, but that doesn't mean you'll necessarily have that issue. there are a lot of very solid bmws out there that don't ever need repairs. that's just much more true for hondas than it is for bmws.

I think the 2012 is probably fine too, most issues will be dealt with by dealerships early on even in new cars, but if you wanted to be safe you could just get a 2013. they can be had for somewhere in the 20s (mid to high).

Honeslty though let me just give you a comprehensive list of what cars you want to check out if you're going for smaller, faster and some tech, sounds like you just really wanted blue tooth though, anything else a must?

bimmers aren't really luxury cars they are drivers cars. they often omit what's considered standard luxury, especially on the 3 series.

CAR NERD CHECKING IN - here is a list of compact luxury cars for under 35 grand:

-Audi A3 (starts at 30k)

-BMW 2 series (starts at 33k)

-Acura ILX (starts at 28k) (this is Honda's luxury division, if you like your current Honda)

-Mercedes-Benz CLA class (starts at 32k)

-Buick Verano (starts at 24k)

I would suggest that, if you're serious, you test drive as many of these as you possibly can. I know that Car and Driver gives the A3 particularly high marks.

EDIT: I just saw that you're worried about maintenance/service fees. That being the case, do NOT buy a pre-owned German car. New German cars are okay, so long as you're only keeping them for a few years, but German cars get very pricey to maintain after a few years (see e.g. Consumer Reports, Edmunds, JD Power & Associates).

I think you will be very happy with any of the above cars (okay, maybe not the Buick). In light of your concern about maintenance costs, I would recommend that if you're looking at one of the German cars above, you might want to lease for 3 or 4 years instead of buying it. You won't encounter any big problems in 3 or 4 years, no matter how hard you push the car.

Yup! Everyone seems to hate that BMW is switching over to electrically-assisted steering (vs. the old hydraulic system), but to be honest I don't think anyone except a professional racer or automotive critic would notice.

no, it's definitely noticeable, and i hate that fake feedback feeling, but that doesn't mean the newer bmws aren't quite nice. but if you don't care about driving cars, and really can't tell the difference between a 2008 bmw and 2008 mercedes, then yeah you'd be fine.

Yeah I just saw that and edited my post. What do you think about leasing? You're right to be concerned about maintenance fees - maintaining an old German car can get very expensive.

Let me ask you this, are the reasons that you are concerned about maintenance fees because you don't want to be spending as much on a car, or because you don't want to have to worry about your car breaking down? these are two very different concerns, and should be approached differently. or is it both? If it's both I think you have to go Japanese.

They're not even close to each other. The IS250 is larger and has an equivalent engine. It does 0 to 60 in just under 8 seconds. The ILX is smaller, more nimble, and does 0 to 60 in a hair over 6 seconds.

I drove it the other day. Thought it was solid...pick-up and handling were good. 8 speed dual clutch transmission is good, from what I understand. SMaller than I'm used to. Probably a decent value overall. Styling much better than the '15. Don't know if I'd get it personally, but def seems viable

First, understand that ~$30k "luxury" cars are MASSIVE striver flame. BMW 3 series, Mercedes C class, every single Acura and Lexus, offer nothing that the majority of cars don't have now. A Hyundai with a few options is nearly identical to an Acura or Lexus except that it isn't as "prestigious," but the truth is, no one is actually impressed by the fact that you have a Lexus IS.

All that said, just get something fun. If you realize that entry level luxury cars are striver flame, get the new Mustang GT. Looks good, it's fast as hell and fun, and for $35k you can get it fully loaded with navi, Bluetooth, and all the shit that you'd get in some $35k Lexus... except it would actually be fun to drive.

You could get a WRX which is a lot of fun and reliable, but maybe a little more of a teenager car.

If you want something slightly more refined, the new BMW 2 series coupe is fun and well balanced, and drives more similarly to the classic BMWs (before they got bloated with bullshit).

Update - I live in SF. Now thinking I get a cheap car like a used VW Golf or civic or Prius or accord and put my money towards buying a place. Right now I'm renting a 1 bedroom. This would almost assuredly be a better financial decision, right?

Yes, that would almost definitely be a better financial decision. The Accord, Civic and Golf are all critically acclaimed cars (the Golf and Accord appear on Car and Driver's 10Best Cars list almost every single year). Nobody's going to mock you or look down on you because you chose to drive a Honda instead of a Mercedes.

I guess the question you have to ask yourself is whether getting an entry-level luxury car, new or pre-owned, would serve some urgent need that a Honda or Volkswagen couldn't possibly fulfill. For example - if you're still in the dating marketplace, or if the work you do involves a ton of client interaction, then you may find it valuable to take the leap and at the very least lease a luxury car for a few years.

So in summary - I think you should get a cheap car (or keep your Accord, whatever) and save for a place. You'll thank yourself for being frugal later. But if you NEED an impressive car, then hey, why not? It's not a tremendous expense, especially if you're getting an entry-level model and leasing instead of buying.
