what is it? drove a bunch of cars recently, wasnt that impressed. the only fun cars -- A4 2.0, 328i, etc. come with high maintenance costs, etc.
what is the credited move here? want a bit of a smaller car than the accord but dont want to pay an arm and leg for something thats going to require a lot of maintenance. budget is 35k for new or 2-4 yr old used.

2012
i want bluetooth
i would like better pickup, etc. other than that, im pretty easy-going. drove an IS250 yesterday, nice car, but pretty crappy pickup - even in power mode. only cars that impressed me were the 328i and the a4 2.0 quattro. but im reading horror stories about maintenance, service fees, etc.
and like i said, a bit smaller than accord would be nice.

lol, a 2012 Accord doesn't have bluetooth?
just get something new. all the new cars have tech that was only available in high end luxury cars just a few years ago.
test drive a Mazda3 and Mazda6
if you want something that's fun as fuck to drive and aren't self-conscious, try a Mini Cooper S or Roadster

He just needs to jump up one year.

oh i meant last generation 328i, if you're getting a current generation 328i. It will be somewhat less reliable, but i haven't heard any really bad news about the car. So oil changes are gonna run you somewhere between $100-$150. But you don't need them as often as with other cars. Still it's costing you more. Every single piece of thing that needs to be replaced will in general cost more. For instance replacing brakes on your accord might have ran you $500 for all of them, For BMWs that's probably what just the parts will cost you for the full set, then whatever labor costs. I always had the hook up on that, so I have no idea what that should cost. Also, tires will be more expensive. I mean just take whatever it costs to replace on the accord and 2.5x it is what I would do. Because for a lot of the stuff not only does it cost more, but its more frequent.
Then once the warranty runs out you have to worry about repairs, something that seems simple and cheap on an accord can get complicated and expensive on a bmw, but that doesn't mean you'll necessarily have that issue. there are a lot of very solid bmws out there that don't ever need repairs. that's just much more true for hondas than it is for bmws.

CAR NERD CHECKING IN - here is a list of compact luxury cars for under 35 grand:
-Audi A3 (starts at 30k)
-BMW 2 series (starts at 33k)
-Acura ILX (starts at 28k) (this is Honda's luxury division, if you like your current Honda)
-Mercedes-Benz CLA class (starts at 32k)
-Buick Verano (starts at 24k)
I would suggest that, if you're serious, you test drive as many of these as you possibly can. I know that Car and Driver gives the A3 particularly high marks.
EDIT: I just saw that you're worried about maintenance/service fees. That being the case, do NOT buy a pre-owned German car. New German cars are okay, so long as you're only keeping them for a few years, but German cars get very pricey to maintain after a few years (see e.g. Consumer Reports, Edmunds, JD Power & Associates).
I think you will be very happy with any of the above cars (okay, maybe not the Buick). In light of your concern about maintenance costs, I would recommend that if you're looking at one of the German cars above, you might want to lease for 3 or 4 years instead of buying it. You won't encounter any big problems in 3 or 4 years, no matter how hard you push the car.

First, understand that ~$30k "luxury" cars are MASSIVE striver flame. BMW 3 series, Mercedes C class, every single Acura and Lexus, offer nothing that the majority of cars don't have now. A Hyundai with a few options is nearly identical to an Acura or Lexus except that it isn't as "prestigious," but the truth is, no one is actually impressed by the fact that you have a Lexus IS.
All that said, just get something fun. If you realize that entry level luxury cars are striver flame, get the new Mustang GT. Looks good, it's fast as hell and fun, and for $35k you can get it fully loaded with navi, Bluetooth, and all the shit that you'd get in some $35k Lexus... except it would actually be fun to drive.
You could get a WRX which is a lot of fun and reliable, but maybe a little more of a teenager car.
If you want something slightly more refined, the new BMW 2 series coupe is fun and well balanced, and drives more similarly to the classic BMWs (before they got bloated with bullshit).

Yes, that would almost definitely be a better financial decision. The Accord, Civic and Golf are all critically acclaimed cars (the Golf and Accord appear on Car and Driver's 10Best Cars list almost every single year). Nobody's going to mock you or look down on you because you chose to drive a Honda instead of a Mercedes.
I guess the question you have to ask yourself is whether getting an entry-level luxury car, new or pre-owned, would serve some urgent need that a Honda or Volkswagen couldn't possibly fulfill. For example - if you're still in the dating marketplace, or if the work you do involves a ton of client interaction, then you may find it valuable to take the leap and at the very least lease a luxury car for a few years.
So in summary - I think you should get a cheap car (or keep your Accord, whatever) and save for a place. You'll thank yourself for being frugal later. But if you NEED an impressive car, then hey, why not? It's not a tremendous expense, especially if you're getting an entry-level model and leasing instead of buying.
