why are you jumping ship? (from the sounds of it you'd made this decision long before your buddy said he was out)
generally, fuck them with no emotion because they will do the same.
but if you actually care about these people or can imagine them being in a position to really help you or really hurt you down the line, then raise the issue and just be honest. let them know you'd already decided to leave and ask if an extra month will help them out, assuming you have the extra month to give.
they might not care at all; they might still be pissed you're leaving. they'll probably give you some credit for being a stand up guy, and in the worst case scenario they're not going to be any more pissed at you than they would have been if you'd just told them to pound sand in the first place.
