just be reasonably smart, and know how to grind, kiss ass and navigate office politics and you can get to director level. my wife did this and went from the lowest level development assistant to a director of development making $110k within six years.

my bro's wife does this. i remember scratching my head when she was killing herself to get into one of the better nurse programs (I don't know what she is exactly but she can prescribe drugs).

Turns out to she knew what she was doing. She was able to work part time after having kids while still making good money and she'll be able to go back to full time and make ~120-150k once the kids are a bit older. Wish my wife had done the same.

my fiancee is a lower-level nurse, she cannot prescribe drugs. But she wants to go back to school and become the kind of nurse who can prescribe drugs. the argument is do we do this before or after kids.

I wouldn't wait that long considering how serious it would be to miss the fertility window or be at high risk for birth defects. While you're probably OK from 34-37, why take the chance when the risks get higher every year?

She's 28. Starts the program when she's 29. Finishes when she's 31. Pop out a kid when she's 32/33.

Why the worry? It's fine. It's worth postponing children for 2 years if it pus you in a much better financial place. If you scope out the UMC suburbs and neighborhoods, the percentage of parents who had their first child in their 30s is very high. Probably the solid majority.

elementary school teacher is very credited. my friend's wife has been doing this for about 10 years and is making nearly 6 figures for working 9 months a year with no fear of ever having a weekend or holiday ruined unexpectedly and with amazing health benefits and a pension.

Yeah, this. Teachers do have to get up obscenely early and it can be tough to get a job as a teacher in the good schools. Everyone wants to teach in a private school or a top public school in a large city.

I'd love a wife who writes and has intellectual interests and truly only works 20 hours a week, the rest of the time working can be on a non-traditional schedule. Plus like every female academic has a bunch of kids because shitlib schools cater to them.

I'd university prof is pretty good, especially if you're planning on having kids.

Downside is that it's hard to get, doesn't pay well, and you'll wind up having to go a couple of events every year with her colleagues and you'll want to shoot yourself in the head the entire time you're with them.

university prof is only good if you're marrying someone that already is one. marrying someone who is trying to become one means (1) years without making any money, (2) no certainty she'll ever get a good job and (3) in order to get the job she wants you have to move to a place like hamilton new york.
