The average guy flames out of BigLaw after ~4 years, tries to go In-house, smaller firm, or government (taking a paycut) and then works his way up the ladder.

Law students fixate on the 160k+ early on, but how easy it to maintain that trajectory, knowing that you're never going to make partner?

Is it fair to assume you can find a good gig making ~200k by the time you're 40/entering your prime earning years/trying to provide for the family? Is 200 too high a guess?

Edit: Assume V50 firm to start

A lot of BIGLAW flame outs never really practice LOL again. So who knows what they are making. They just go into the general workforce.

Other pppl maybe are making 150k to 250k doing GOV law or some non profit shit or inhouse crap or small firm. 200k is not a fucking bad lifestyle once you know wtf u are doing in law. U are just repeating the same shit over

I don't have a huge client base, originated about $425k last year, from some new clients and some clients that came with me from biglaw.

Mostly just became the second most important lawyer for the firm's biggest most demanding client...involved some pretty hard work to solidify that position, but now it basically guarantees I'm busy 30 hours a week (with no end in sight), and everything else is gravy.

$3550. We have rent control, so it can't go up more than 1-2% a year, which is one of our landlord pressure points, as we pretend with the landlord that we will stay forever, and I might just do that to spite him.

I have investors for each, so me personally not that much. One had a road bump and is still a little negative because of vacancy, but not for much longer....the other is solidly positive.

Transactional. We have lit partners who do similarly well, but we aren't making any lit partners right now without a portable book.

some have their own clients, one had a big case that kept a couple busy, but at this point many of them just feed off the transaction client teet....it is actually a big point of contention in the firm that the lit group doesn't have enough of their own business, and doesn't seem to try that hard to get it.

b/c most companies don't generate that kind of repeat litigation business and if they do they farm it out to 10 different firms and none of them are midlaw

actually, I don't think this is correct. The firms that farm work out actually do give it to Midlaw....our rates are like 30% lower than biglaw, and our lawyers are all form biglawyers who can handle 90% of litigation just as competently....most co's are very cost conscious about litigation costs, especially when it isn't "bet the company" stuff that they feel they need to give to the tip top firms.

first of all, the poster wasn't saying that people with $400k books are all generating that off of one client.

second lol wtf you're saying that companies that generate a half million in litigation work every year spread that between ten biglaw firms at $50,000 each? that's retarded.

More misable than working a tedious fedgov job? Always wondering what options you could have had? More shitty than settling for a "lifer" status at the age of 25? more shitty Than having no career options? Shitter than DC? That's debatable. At least when you go to law school and put in a few years in biglaw you more or less have the chance to transition out of law or solo if you have any people skills.

lol @ "career trajectory", if I had been that careful, I wouldn't have left biglaw after a year.

"Regional" BigLaw @110K ----> small business position (vaguely related to law) @70K that I liked decently but knew wasn't right, stayed for 18 months -----> feels-good current career currently @65K, been doing it for about 5 years.

Not very. I have good credentials (top 10 UG, top 15 law) and I wasn't picky. Looking back, maybe I should have been pickier.

care to offer any more details? where did you look? how did u explain leaving firm? references? how long unemployed? what would you have done differently?

Sure.

I explained leaving the firm by being very upfront about the lifestyle clash - not interested in working 70+ hour weeks even off-and-on, didn't realize it until I did it for a year.

I had one reference from the firm. He was a nice guy, he knew it wasn't for me pretty quickly.

I was only unemployed for about six weeks. later, I was unemployed for about six months after the post-BigLaw job, but that was largely due to timing - it wasn't very difficult to find employment once I absolutely knew what I wanted to do.

Don't really want to get into the content of the job or the job search immediately post-BigLaw, but it's pretty banal.

What would I have done differently? Not much. BigLaw was toxic for me, that was barely a decision. I should have retooled more aggressively in my new field instead of "doing just enough" to break in, but part of the appeal of my current job is precisely that I don't have to strive...

UVA Law did a study of its class of 1990 twenty years after graduation (i.e., mid-career) and I think they found median household income was like $250k. Top 10% was over $1 million.

That's pretty good.
