The one that should stick out is Boston, as in, why would anyone choose Boston over NYC given the comparison in cities and costs?

tbf any NYC metric is including the whole city (if not metro). the core of boston/cambridge is expensive but still not nearly as expensive as MFH

also, I believe they would chose it if their jerb is there

Finally, this is exactly what I've been saying and everyone acted like I was being ridiculous. Living well requires like $500k/year in NYC and even $240k in a place like Birmingham, AL. All these "oh, you only need $50k/year to live well" posts are flame.

a) I would adjust some of those in several directions. Good private schools also cost more than $26k/year, and college will cost more than $30k/year. And they're allotting only $5k/year for savings. And I wouldn't pay a 30 year mortgage if I could avoid it. Not sure how they factor in stuff like maintenance.

b) If you live in MFH, something like a vacation home (or similar money to spend renting vacation homes) is a necessity. Otherwise, the urban environment becomes stifling.

I'm not really quibbling with this (and you just described why I wouldn't buy one), but you generally want to be able to rent a nice place in something like the Hamptons for the summer and that will come out to quite a bit.

By the way, they're just describing post-tax expenses. So to earn that you need an almost million dollar salary.

The cost of your (necessary) vacation home apparently scales linearly with the cost of your actual home. You need a 4MM apt to live well and despite being in NYC your car costs don't go down.

Pretty tight little analysis they got going there.

Why do you think that?

City - House - Vacation

Anchorage - $775k - $400k

Atlanta - $1.4 million - $1.6 million

Minneapolis - $1.2 million - $775k

Salt Lake - $775k - $800k

maybe that seems like a silly assumption but the whole thing is a silly exercise, more for entertainment value than anything else.

Man, how to waste money. You can live exactly as well for so much less.

25% of your expenses on a vacation home?! Spending every vacation in the same shitbox in Fort Lauderdale has to be one of the most depressing things ever. My parents spend $0 on vacation and have a much better time of it - they rent their house out for $6k/month to cover costs and explore different cities around the world, often staying with friends in nice houses for free.

At that house price, just go to top public school.

Spending $30,000 every single year so your 7 children can go to Sarah Lawrence? Good call.

Of course it's really all about the housing, since that's 75% of the budget (probably not advised by most personal finance gurus).

The people at that income level aren't spending their one two-week vacation every year at a Ft. Lauderdale condo. They will use that as a weekend getaway. To give a NYC example, it will be a house in the hamptons that they use during he summer, a home in VT for skiing every weekend in the winter, or a place in florida where they will spend a lot of the winter. Those people still usually take a nice real vacation or two in addition.

Where the hell did they get $26k for private school in NYC? Try $45k for 1 kid. Living well = 3 kids, so $135k.
