At a heavily attended industry event. My heart starts beating fast just thinking about it. Think I might need to take beta blockers.

I can't even imagine. Even at local CLE's douchebag attorneys get into huge arguments with the CLE presenters about nit picky details.

I'll be the only lawyer on the panel....rest are business people, so not worried that I won't be able to cut it in that regard....just nervous as shit about public speaking in general, and my hands start shaking when I'm nervous.

Brother, you'll do fine. What's there to be nervous about? You go up there, you have a conversation, you help the panel to work their way through the topics. Just do some IRL practice runs if you can--arrange a few volunteers to simulate the panel so you get a sense of the live experience.

Nervous that my voice will crack, hands will shake, and I'll look like an JV idiot. Just the normal stuff.

The fact that I'm already nervous a month out doesn't bode well.

Practice will lessen that nervousness significantly. So will preparedness--if you know your stuff, you're not going to be bothered by the idea of your voice cracking (who gives a fuck about that anyway) or your hands shaking. You know the material. You know the schedule. You know the drill. So you can have at it.

TITCR brother; make it like instinct. And don't worry too much about specific wording of individual responses--don't make it too canned; you want to have flexibility so you can comfortably deviate from the script. Focus on the ideas / big themes / the outline of how the panel will go. Drill those things through practice. And you'll do great.

NP. Don't focus on past difficulties you've had in this setting; focus on preping for what's coming up and doing well. And keep in mind "prepared" and "practiced" are two different things--you want to be both. Know you shit but also have the experience of running through the simulation a few times; you need both to have mastery. Happy to help with more specific guidance as this gets closer, to the extent it's useful.

Brother, that's kind of you to say. I don't know how helpful I can be on this dangerous, powerful, exciting, rocket-powered semi-anonymous greatbort-treehouse-clubhouse-dungeon of great brothers; but happy to try. Best, NM P.S. Don't worry about beta-blockers or any of that shit. Just master the material, practice through some simulated panels, and you'll do well.

it might be a bit of an exaggeration, but knowing you are fully prepared for something is always a great thing to fall back on in stressful situations.

beta blockers are pretty sweet for performance anxiety. haven't used them in years, but i used to get nervous in court and those things completely switch off any outward signs of stress or fear.

I've only moderated one or two panel discussions in my life, and they were with people internal to my company, so a much lower pressure situation.

But I have been the guy who runs the crowd mic at big industry panels such as the one you describe. I understand the stress. You'll do great. The people who speak at these things speak at dozens of panels each year, good or bad you'll soon be forgotten.

if i can suggest one thing, starting out as a public speaker, don't try to win ppl over with subtle wit, especially in this format. that's something you'd work up to over time as you get a sense of how audiences react to you. just be straightforward, veering on boring. it's better that people think your personality is limp than you're insecure and seeking approval. stick to the issues, think of a few different ways of looking at them, and above all else remember you're the only one who really cares who well you do, barring some massive tearful, diarrhea-expelling breakdown. i find pretty quickly in situations like that the louder you make your voice from the beginning, the more in control you feel. embrace it and people will respect that even if they think you might be full of shit

That shit is the fucking wonder drug.
