If you're in legit biglaw, then absolutely. Most of the in-house bros you work with started in biglaw; if not your firm, then one a lot like it. I hated biglaw as much as anybody, but my current super-chill 9-5 would not be possible without it.

really i haven't...i lateraled a little less than a year ago. At old firm most people my year were either still there, lateraled to another firm, or burned out. Maybe i know one or two people in the 5-6th year who copped in house, but in companies that seems boring and not super chill..

For our purposes, all companies are boring; even if you're working at Apple or Google, the legal department is still going to be boring. So you can eliminate that as a criterion right now. Admittedly, though, going in-house to a company that pays less yet still has the biglaw hours/ethos is the worst case scenario, so you're right to be concerned about that part.

headhunters don't tend to recruit for in-house. i suck at networking so i basically did resume drops to postings on linkedin, goinhouse.com, etc. linkedin proved the most fruitful since i tended to follow up with the HR contact listed on the linkedin job page.

interview process took a long time. most companies are slow to act, so once you start the rounds, it can take 3-4 mos. i made it to the final round of a couple companies (incl google) and got a couple offers from startups that i declined. ultimately went with an established tech company with a stable revenue stream.

i can't underscore enough how chill it is. i was once in the office at 5:30 pm and my boss, on the way out, asked me in a worried tone whether everything was okay (because i had stayed late). i've been in-house for 2 years and literally have worked a total of maybe 2 hours over the weekend (basically one firedrill negotiation about a year ago).

Someone I worked with in biglaw hell was a usual drinking buddy and we ranted all the time about biglaw, the partners we worked for, and life in general. Said buddy copped a chill in-house job with someone they met in the course of a previous deal at their old firm, and it turns out there was an opening for me too (company was hiring heavily in our niche at the time). I interviewed, they loved me, and the rest is history. Purely organic networking. In my experience, networking is very valuable, but anything explicitly labeled as networking is worthless. Anything explicitly labeled as networking where you have to pay to attend is pure flame.

i focus on product development (both HW/SW) and commercial licensing. 205k (salary+annual stock options vesting). if there's any lack of satisfaction, it's that the work comes easy to me. nothing ever raises my blood pressure except sometimes dealing with engineers who think they know legal concepts when they don't and having to repeatedly "teach" them best practices. boss is extremely hands-off, there's no drama, and other internal stakeholders love the work i do. couldn't be better.

Any of those latter options aren't really "exit" options since you could have done them pre-law. Only real exit options for lit are just gradually stepping down in firm size, prestige etc. Best just to open a law business.

Some of the shitlawyers make $200K plus. Really the only satisfied lawyers I know other than rainmaking biglaw partners are solo practitioner shitlaw bros who have autonomy and control over their lives. There is no price that is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

But I get that it is very difficult for biglaw bros to take that jump off the cliff.

Niche area that was relevant to their core strategy (think shareholder activism) and a lot of direct exposure to one of the principals. Was lucky to work for a Partner who trusted me enough to allow significant interaction with the client at a relatively high level for a 1st and then 2nd year Associate. Client & I also had good chemistry and I developed a good relationship with their management team that provided me the space to (in a diplomatic way) express interest in joining their firm if there were ever anything open, which led to a conversation about what kind of role would be compelling at which point I indicated zero appetite for a legal role and open-mindedness about hitting the reset button on my career.

When I left a few years ago I was making $170k and earned a ~$35k bonus. Hours were brutal. 2600 first year and a little less the next.

I am a senior analyst and I really love what I do. Don't see my role changing - not going to be a PM or Partner here but that's okay. Last year my bonus was more than five times my six figure base.

Beyond comp, life is good - WFH indefinitely but before this madness I was working 7 to 5, home for dinner with the wife and kids, and then "back on" from 7 to 10, drink/smoke with the wife, fuck her brains out or two pump chump depending on my general mood, and then go to bed. Some weekends, maybe 20% of the time.
