*N*tcr my good brother

it is very context-sensitive, but if the punctuation isn't part of what you're quoting, it shouldn't be there

say you called me a stupid faggot

i'd say, "boogie called me a 'stupid faggot'."

you know?

I understand where you are coming from and you are not wrong in terms of accuracy. But it's extremely aesthetically unappealing. I'd much rather sacrifice a small amount of accuracy to keep everything much tidier looking.

only accuracy can be tidy. otherwise it's like "checking your email" by marking them all read

And that's the issue. What matters is whether you care more about accuracy or aesthetics. And either way you decide an astute reader will note the unsatisfactory decision you have made.

it makes sense for question marks like why did boogie call me a "stupid faggot"? but "stupid faggot." instead of "stupid faggot". looks better and doesn't change the meaning. and if it were "you're a stupid faggot," said boogie the comma would look stupid outside the quote even though it's not in the original

if that was his whole statement, the comma would arguably be there, but i see your point

i think with wikipedia the problem is they don't base it on context and just do commas and everything outside always as a rule and it looks like a mess with their backeted footnotes
