Germans have always genetically been good at fighting- take that genetic material, add in Nazi culture, and the result if what you got- probably the greatest army the world has ever seen.
It was really the uniformity of their quality that was so impressive. The US airborne divisions were as good as any the Germans had, but the second and third rate (comparatively) German divisions were vastly superior than their opponents.
Even late in the war, Germans could basically cobble together divisions out of Luftwaffe ground crews and what not and they would fight astonishingly well (e.g. Seelow Heights). |
