Florida already has pretty right-wing laws on things like guns, taxes, and the death penalty, so I don't need to spend much time changing laws to suit my right-wing views.

First, I need to think about the state's economy and what it looks like in the long term. Tourism is huge - but tourism will probably take a hit because it is now a foreign country to most Americans. Agriculture is big - but potentially threatened by climate change. Science is actually probably surprisingly big, given that Florida has a lot of good research universities.

In terms of risk: climate change (or sorry - nuisance flooding) is a big risk. As a coastal state, Florida stands to lose a lot from coastal flooding and increased hurricanes.

OK, so first acts -

(1) I call up the US President and negotiate favorable agreements on trade and tourism. Plus I want him to keep all the US military bases in Florida open: I don't particularly want to have to pay for a military, so I want to be under the US security umbrella.

(2) I aggressively negotiate trade agreements with Latin American countries. Florida has good economic and cultural ties to Latin America already, and I'll be able to jump ahead of the United States on this, since our free trade agreements there are stalling.

(3) Create new revenue streams by taxing tourists in ways that won't scare them off, but that take advantage of my new-found sovereignty. For example, I require a "visa" to enter the country, but similar to the way that Turkey does it: tourists just pay 10-20 bucks at passport control to get in, no bureaucracy or need to go to the consulate or any of that crap. Probably some subtle hotel taxes and stuff too. Keep in mind that Disneyworld just became cheaper for a lot of international tourists because my new Florida currency is probably cheap.

(4) Huge tourism campaign taking advantage of the last sentence of my prior thought.

(5) Pass business-friendly laws that Florida previously couldn't due to federal pre-emption. Aggressively attract business. Adopt UK-style financial regulation laws and encourage US financial institutions to relocate to FL. Get into the offshore banking game.

(6) Invest heavily in science and technology, adopt laws that make it easy for the STEM crowd to get Florida citizenship. Reverse what the current FL governor is doing and seek to make FSU and Florida major research institutions (while maintaining elite football teams, of course). Encourage tech startups to move to FL - all the great weather and natural disasters of California, without the shitlib laws.

(7) Mollify libs by going on a big public works project spree. No fun being a dictator if you can't big build monuments to yourself in the form of highways, sea walls, light rail systems, etc. Because I am now free of US federal laws, I can build shit cheaper by using non-union labor and not having to go through as much red tape on environmental reviews and all that.
