Man walking on the Mars.

I figure we won't encounter intelligent life unless we can find the Prothean Beacon on Mars or something.

Public unions are the biggest waste of public money in our states. The trouble it, they and their DNC allies exchange money and power, screwing the rest of us.

Self-driving cars are the single best way to avoid the largest number of preventable deaths in the US. And fuel cell technology will end both global warming fears as well as the power of the middle east. Let the terrorists drink their oil.

Few things will be remembered 1,000 years from now. This will be one. No other single event would disrupt politics and religion as much. Most futurists think this will happen within the next 200 years.

Even it's likely our radio waves will be picked up by someone 40 light years away, who knows if they'll ping back. What seems more likely is finding some bugs on Mars or some germs catching a ride on an asteroid. That wouldn't be as dope, though.

no, and that's why they're called futurists and not scientists.

Whats interesting are the international protocols for how to handle such an event. Governments have disaster plans, the UN has a contact procedure, scientists have representatives, etc. Very sci-fi shit

This is the UN one. The interesting ones are the different ways scientists think we would be able to communicate (symbols, numbers, etc) and what to tell them

Any person or organization detecting a signal should try to verify that it is likely to be of intelligent origin before announcing it.

The discoverer of a signal should, for the purposes of independent verification, communicate with other signatories of the Declaration before making a public announcement, and should also inform their national authorities.

Once a given astronomical observation has been determined to be a credible extraterrestrial signal, the astronomical community should be informed through the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams of the IAU. The Secretary-General of the United Nations and various other global scientific unions should also be informed.

Following confirmation of an observation's extraterrestrial origin, news of the discovery should be made public. The discoverer has the right to make the first public announcement.

All data confirming the discovery should be published to the international scientific community and stored in an accessible form as permanently as possible.

Should evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence take the form of electromagnetic signals, the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) should be contacted, and may request in the next ITU Weekly Circular to minimize terrestrial use of the electromagnetic frequency bands in which the signal was detected.

Neither the discoverer nor anyone else should respond to an observed extraterrestrial intelligence; doing so requires international agreement under separate procedures.

The SETI Permanent Committee of the IAA and Commission 51 of the IAU should continually review procedures regarding detection of extraterrestrial intelligence and management of data related to such discoveries. A committee comprising members from various international scientific unions, and other bodies designated by the committee, should regulate continued SETI research.

But the real key wouldn't just be something that extends life to 120, 160, 200, etc. years but something that would keep us healthy and active for that period of time. Imagine the notion of living to 120, at which point you will die painlessly, but at 120 you will look and feel like someone at 35.

cellular damage could conceivably be reversed or you could have complete body replacement over time, but the easiest way of addressing aging would be to merge with robots. the best scenario would be to take a human brain, make extremely thin slices of it and then through computer image processing recreate the neuronal connections in a computer. you could then copy the software brain (ensuring redundancy) and the person would be immune to the effects of age, since they no longer exist as a physical entity that can decay.

Not sure about reversing. But extending seems very feasible. Worth thinking about the first-order, second-order, etc. economic implications of this sort of discovery. Interesting thought experiment. Particularly if the process is time and resource intensive (versus "just pop a pill"--which could come later down the road). Ask yourself how much you would be willing to pay for a guaranteed twenty additional years of life. How much others would pay? Now what if the good is highly rivalrous in an economic sense, eg there are per annum limits on how much can be performed / produced so one brother's use of the therapy takes away the opportunity of another brother to use it for that year. There's certainly a scenario where all of this is NBD; people have argued "look, there are already lots of things we pay / don't pay for that affect life expectancy if not span. Market forces will sort this out smoothly." But I'm not sure how smooth the transition would be, particularly if the discovery is: 1. made privately (which is likely, though possibly with mixed public funding); 2. sudden in nature (not a long PR wind up); 3. Immediately significant (in sense of decades extension, not just a couple years at first).

Did you ever see the (admittedly grotesque) mouse studies where they sewed a young mouse and and old mouse together and the older mouse appeared to get younger while the younger mouse seemed to become older? Based on that seems feasible.

With respect to your second q, depends on the parameters and QOL. Wouldn't pay much to be a 90 year old in a 90 year old body that makes it to live to 110. Honestly, my main interest at that point would be to hold on in the hopes that something that can extend life significantly longer and reverse the aging effects comes along.

What type of socio-economic effect will we see?

Undoubtedly, the well-off will be able to afford the necessary treatments to extend their life while the much much more populous poor will not be able to.

So the proletariats will be numerous, but they'll die sooner. How will that affect things?

The parameters are everything. Key questions:

- How much will it cost? Is it one time or continuing? Finding the approximate cutoff for who will be able to afford it is important. If we determine it is top 0.01% only then the impact will be minimal. If it is the top 20% then it will be massive.

- What will "extended life" look like? Can people work or will they essentially be retirees living for decades longer?

- Will it extend reproduction? In other words, if upper middle class people end up with a 300 year lifespan and they can have kids until 295, then the demographic balance of society is going to start shifting.

Yeah, goes to the very notion of "retirement", which is already a huge problem. Retirement was created when people weren't expected to live much past 65, and we're already looking at pushing it back. If you extend life significantly, then we're either going to need to find a way for people to pay for their extended retirement, they are going to have to accept less in retirement, or they are going to have to work longer.
