Came home after basketball at 8 pm to a full case of DAT DREAD

Date: March 31st, 2015 6:58 AM Author: rebellious autistic state knowing full well that I would be working all night. The DREAD started as I was driving home from the game, worrying about the 20 minutes it would take to pick up pizza.
Should have started working at 9 pm after eating. Instead watched Saul until 10:15.
Now its 4 am.
9-5 midlaw. except that it is apparently 9 am -5 pm and then 9 pm to 5 am. |

And for what? So I can get breakfast one day and take a slightly larger cut of the rent seeking we do as lawyers?
When I got booted from biglaw I realized the fucked up perspective of putting a clients' arbitary needs above your own - "OMG THESE FUCKING APOSTROPHES NEED TO BE FORMATTED BY 6 AM OR ELSE"
As I get dragged back in, at least I am able to sense what is arbitary and bullshit. Of course it doesn't prevent me from taking it and saying "Thank" like a good striver.
Getting paid hourly does not help as it justifies almost any unreasonable working condition. It also makes all non-billable time (including sleep, social life and vacation) into an opportunity cost.

I never work wekends and telework on Fridays. Today I am getting an important package in the mail so my boss let me take half a day off to make sure I get it. I have none of the work/life balance issues you speak of and my focus in life is on my hobbies and family.
But I only make $110k/yr. And the big promotion I'm being groomed for? $120-125k. You would never trade lives with me (not that I would with you either) because you need the $400k salary to be sane. |

I wont do it, but I could. Maybe that flexibility will give me some solace down the line. |
