Comparing offers from both. I understand they both pay at around the top of the market (EDIT: So I am going with one of the two, I have an another offer but it is off the table). So it comes down to the intangibles. Any insights on the real office environment? All I got was how awesome everyone thought their particular shop was. What kind of hours to expect from either? And yes, the comp offers are quite good. I understand Amazon is a brutal environment to work in. Advancement seems to be the typical progression as most inhouse places.

I don't know much about Google. The impression I get from Amazon (which could be outdated, but probably isn't) is that they are generally understaffed and in a perpetual triage mode.

With regard to compensation, my understanding is that their compensation is good when you take stock into account, and if you stick around long enough for stock to vest, but not amazing otherwise.

And the hours sir? From an office culture perspective, the folks at Google seemed to be more chill, so there pitch that they had a good office environment rang more true. That said though, the folks at Google are not slackers and they do seem to work hard.

At Amazon they pitched the positive work environment, but I also got the feeling it was very competitive. They also kept emphasizing how frugal the company is, which obviously has practical implications in the workplace. But what I cannot get a clean read on is the hours.

From a tech perspective this is like the difference between going to Harvard (Google) or MIT (Amazon).

Google really is the most prestigious, but Amazon is a bit more nich-ey and actually sells shit. Do you have any preference in terms of the types of technology you would be tying your life to?

Honestly if it were me, I would pick Google but I'm a nerd and a coder.

from my dealings with the company, Amazon seems much more corporate and has what feels like a cutthroat environment. the people were definitely more corporate, less startupty/tech personalities.

people at google are cultish. they think "googlers" are an aryan tech race. it's bizarre. the perks are unreal on a day to day basis. laundry done, all your meals, transportation from san fran to mv, etc. the mountain view office is pretty amazing but all those perks are there because they want you to work as much as possible. you'll also get fat working at google with all the free food. they have the "google 15" because there is so much good shit to eat. much more startupy but at that size, LOL, it's corporate as fuck.

meh, after a month or so it's not that special. every legit tech company in SV has food and perks. when you come from wherever you're coming, i'm assuming biglaw, it's probably unbelievable. you'd trade a normal work life balance for free meals and laundry. Are you really going to bring your dirty clothes to the office? Are you really going to play volleyball? the free food is def nice but you'll get fat.

Google and its not even a question. I'm corp in house at another tech co in the bay area and am opposite Amazon frequently. They seem overworked, insufferable, and are forced to take hard-line positions by crazy management. I know a few happy in-house attorneys at Google. Mine too. They seem to have a legal department culture that grew out of beating up shitty little vendors who sell on their site and they bring that relatively dumb mentality to other businesses where it doesn't work and it makes them seem really out of touch.

I know absolutely nothing about either company, but I would pick Google unless you like Seattle.

both are wonderful companies. they compensate heavily with stock, so part of your assessment should include which company has better prospects. don't take the dollar figures they give you now at face value.

btw, congrats.

Google and it's not close. The SF/SV v Seattle issue clinches it, but not bc Seattle is rainy wah wah SoCal bitchmades represent. Your network at google will be infinitely more valuable bc the people who leave will go a million other places that would be worthwhile, partly bc of market density but also bc the software training scales to a lot of different stuff, "software is eating the world" etc. Amazon would have great exit options and will place plenty of people into other cool shit, but not anything like the reach of the google network particularly when you consider the pedigree of people in the business at google v amazon.

I know a not-especially-impressive guy at Amazon fwiw. Google is more impressive.

Don't you think it's likely that a person who could score an in house job at Google will be more likely to be able to get one at Amazon

Idiot
