no way. but if 9-5 and many hours of the day are totally mindless is your thing random F500 office park job is the way to go.
it will feel similar to office space, though. or so i am told.

A) that is a rare salary for most in a company.
B) that isn't rare for in-house counsel in a company.
That is why B is better.

I have this(80k, 42-47 hour weeks, 4 wks of vacation, suburban office park, etc.) and always wonder what it would be like on the other side with a more high powered striver career. You lawyers have made me think I probably made the right decision tho....
It also helps that I don't live on the coasts so my CoL is relatively pretty good.

Is there possibility to make more? Are you learning skills that you think might be transferrable?
The vacation is big for me. Right now I basically can never take more than a couple days off at a time and even then I have to spend a couple hours each day responding to e-mails, making phone calls and writing letters and shit.

With a promotion or two I could probably make up to 120-150k, but that wouldn't be for years(like 10 more years). Right now I can probably expect to trudge upwards 3%-5% per year. Not terrible, not great.
I think the skills are reasonably transferable. It's hard to say. I look for jobs here and there and there's stuff. Not as much as I would like but I am not on the coasts so my options are more limited than somewhere like NY/DC/SF.

Hi me.
I work in IT making 75k. With overtimes that's around 80k, with bonus included like 95k. Never stepped foot in a college classroom.

Law grad here that made the kind of switch being discussed here. I now work in data analytics team at a F500 making low six fig. 4 week vacation, 45-50 hr weeks with minimal overtime here and there, no weekends worked so far. Minimal bonus.
Aside from the money aspect, I really like the work I do. I think the work is interesting and challenging. The work I do involves data extraction / manipulation, and running analytics reports to the firm's partners for brainstorming business strategy or validating their business decisions, regarding sales strategy, product management, marketing, etc. The work I do is pretty technical - involving very heavy use of SQL and Excel, yet not engineer-level technical. It's an ideal balance of both 'technical' and 'soft' (presentation, meetings, etc) type of work that I really like about my job.
If I have a choice between a mind-numbing, paper-pushing Biglaw litigation job for 200k and my job for 100k, I would take my job hands down, just because I just can't tolerate bull shit work like doing doc review and writing memos all day.

It's not the best job that there is, but I enjoy it way better than law. Honestly it would be a thousand times better than any shitlaw gig.
Ideally, I'd like to work in some kind of front office finance role, such as equity research, doing valuations for M&A, or high end strategy consulting.
I totally missed my boat on those elite jobs... and I am pretty content with the shit I've got for now.
After a couple of years I might do an MBA if I can get into a M7 school.

I sometimes think something like this, assuming flexible working hours, very interesting/cool work, and ability to work remotely at least 50% of the time, might be the ideal setup for a girl who has done a few years making money in biglaw/bigfinance and wants to transition into something more "lifestyle" and rewarding.
If a guy made this move he has to be prepared for a life of getting sub-par women, if women pay attention to him at all. I can't think of one quality girl with a college degree who would date a guy with this sort of job.

Ummm...most girls I know think that $85k is a below-market year end bonus. Girls are emotional, but when it comes to finding someone to settle down with, they will never realistically consider Mr. $85k unless the girl in question comes from infinity money.
They would date the guy if he came from a lot of family money and was doing a career he loved. Or if there was a lot of upside and he was just starting out. Or if the girl and guy in question were just straight out of college when everyone is poor, relatively speaking.
But, no. Generally no quality woman with a decent job over the age of 25 or so dates men whose salaries will max out at $85k.
