Even so, he didn't get a PhD until age 36. People usually say mathematicians are washed up after 30 or 35. And usually if you don't get at least a postdoc straight out of your PhD, you're considered det in the academic world.

"By 2009, he had turned his attention to the twin primes conjecture, which postulates that there are an infinite number of prime number pairs with a difference of two. Examples of twin prime pairs include 5 and 7, 11 and 13, and 17 and 19, but no one could prove that these pairs continue to exist all the way up the number line. In fact, no one could prove that there is any bounded prime gap at all, that primes don’t just grow infinitely far apart."

what is unclear? no one could prove the following statement until him: There is a number K such that there are an infinite number of pairs of primes p_1 and p_2 such that p_2 = p_1 + K.

"Twin primes" are when K = 2. If I remember right, people have proved there is a K <= 246 for which that's true.

no.

1. it's very easy to prove that there are infinitely many prime numbers period. you learn how to prove it in any number theory class

2. what the nowag proved is that there are infinitely many pairs of prime numbers that are less than 70 million apart from each other.

This is a significant result because when you think about it you might think that primes drift farther and farther apart from each other the farther out you go to infinity. The nowag proved this is wrong

also, you're a fucking tool for putting "theory of primes" in quotation marks like that.

That's also not exactly true. The density of primes goes to 0 (that is, count the number of primes less than N. that number will be about N/log(N)). He just proved that there is an exceptional set of pairs of primes whose difference is bounded uniformly by something big (but was later reduced to something like a few hundred)
