So I'd basically be writing how-to articles and stuff from NY office. And honestly, it sounds kind of awesome. Strict 9-5, but 130 salary 50k bonus target, pretty great benefits (worse vacation, but 401k matching, etc.) I guess normal expectations are making site more useful, writing articles, collaborating with experts (you recruit) to write articles, advising on additional features etc. Trajectory in a few years also would involve marketing/presenting on product.

I want to take this job so badly. But if it sucks, I'm basically out of the game, right? Currently 6th year corp V10, with family, wanting to slow things down and enjoy life.

recruiter- not publicly announced as far as i know. yes i have the offer.

it does sound amazing. i just don't plan on staying in nyc forever. or for much longer even, honestly. and i can't imagine where this would go. i guess if i'm good, maybe working remotely? seems like a job, other than marketing, you could probably do anywhere. did not want to ask because didn't want to seem like i was already looking for exit.

working with them already looking for low-stress in-house. this came up as a "hey, this is something different. what do you think?"

and if i only did it for a year wouldn't i be screwed? i mean, nothing like it around. guessing done at firms. pretty sure same would be true for in-house.

seems like such a sweet, but nonetheless high stakes offer.

have to come back and update two months in.

best job i have ever had. only job i have ever really enjoyed. i get 1-2 weeks to write a 5-10 page practical guidance article on a topic that's invariably exhaustively treated in a half dozen client memos. so you just research and switch up the language/organization enough so that you aren't plagiarizing.

20 vacay days per year. ended up getting it up to 155 salary w 25k bonus target. 8% 401k matching.

i work 35 hours per week in an office that is legitimately chill. no one pointing out your email typos. (or annoying "developer" misspellings) big law freedom- no one cares if you're there just as long as you're getting shit done and aren't noticeably always absent. not quite big law pay. but i don't think there's a job where you could be paid as much for working as little. and actually, since the people are nice and the product is good and you're not super stressed, easy to actually care about making it better and doing a good job.

smart, super chill people. everyone has families. everyone is there to pointedly NOT be in big law.

i never realized how shit my life was until it wasn't anymore.

have a blackberry. have NEVER checked it from home after first week. no expectation to. people take their vacations. no one checks in. you know, like a regular job you don't have to take home with you.

i honestly didn't know something like this existed. seriously, look out for similar. plc is expanding big time. be on the lookout for legal editor posts.

gl, bro. i had slight misgivings typical of a risk averse lawyer: what if i hate it- how transferable, etc? those are all but gone now. i like the job and it's super stable in that it's the growth driver of west and lexis now. (double digit last several years). practical guidance is where it's at. and then it's a massive co. pretty sure i could move within it at least to another law, bus, or bus/law role.

just as an fyi: lexis and bloomberg have similar gigs. plc's is by far the best and has 10x as much up so far. and i think tends to pay the most. (though they used to pay even more). but i hear culture/pay are pretty comparable throughout. with lexis/bloomberg being a little less pay but even more chill.

plc right now looking for white collar and arbitration people and state specific modules (expanding more into lit)

can you tell me what the lexis and bloomberg services are called, and where may i observe their jerb listings?

ty for poasting useful stuff.

no- it should all be there, but sometimes the ads are a little "disguised". apply to anything that talks about drafting/editing/content creation in nyc (or sometimes dc). if it's a new area, west sometimes won't disclose that it's a practical law-specific job. and will just say it's an editor for reuters, because they don't want competitors to know which areas they're expanding into. (See current ad for white collar) sometimes the ads don't wind up being for plc, and there is a range of what they'll pay in other roles. but better to over vs underapply. not much turnover for these jobs, but interestingly, not many applicants either. tends to fly under radar of most associates as possible path.

lexis is lexis practice advisor. looks like they're looking for 5th year plus associates to write for m&a and banking/finance.

http://jobs.lexisnexis.com/lexisnexis/legal-associate-banking-finance-transactional

bloomberg is bloomberg bna: corporate transactions. it's super brand new and was just announced a few months ago. good cause they're probably doing a shit ton of work. bad because it's a little less stable if they end up not being able to make a go of it.

it's a better qol than any job i ever imagined being able to have.

now if i can only persuade them after a couple of years to let me work from home. no reason i shouldn't be able to except for setting precedents. could absolutely be done from anywhere.

and it'd be way nicer to be earning my current salary in montana, or some similar somewhere than nyc.

Can't see why that would be a problem. They'd save on expensive MFH real estate, and there's little you'd have to be physically present for.

agreed.

but 0 people work entirely from home other than a few contractors who are paid way less. and guessing i can't be the only one who thinks it'd be a sweet perq. they've gotta have already said no sometime in the last five years.

i'd probably have to be in good standing and have a compelling reason to get it approved.

Curious -- how much does a subscription to Practical Law cost, e.g. if I wanted to get in and look at their sample documents?

some are available for free. mainly current event type articles, the glossary, and one or two other randos. you can get a free trial if you want but it'll involve a convo with someone in marketing.

prices range. big firms pay anywhere from nothing to a whole lot more depending on what other west subscriptions they have and how tempted they are to leave for a competitor. small law generally pays like $100-200 per month for access to two areas (i think). not that bad. probably easier to just borrow a friend's pw.

i can't. whole other department.

but i've heard they're pretty easy to get. just annoying cause it'll take marketing a couple days to call you, so delay. it's kind of a high risk offering in that you could technically get your free trial, download all available docs and be done. so i think they do a little screening to try to make sure that it's a legitimate request.

Who decides what topics you have to write on? That's literally all you do? What do you think you'll be doing in 1 yr, 5 yrs?

I saw that position but didn't even apply for the reasons you mentioned in your initial post...regrets!!
