Hahhahaha

Initial investment: three extra years of school, 300k in cost + plus opportunity cost

Payoff: Years later, I'm super successful, starting my own hedge fund. I need someone to do the fund formation and tax planning, I'll do it myself and just go off of what I learned 15 years ago in Seton Hall's Corporations class as a 2L

Dude, I think you can fool proles with either degree. I went to a law school with a top Bschool and took MBA classes. I know how fucking dumb those MBA clowns are. I would never take business (or legal) advice from an MBA unless they have econ undergrad or grad as well. UG Finance -> MBA puts you slightly above a rock in my book.

What you are saying is completely factually correct, but it sounds like you read it out of a school brochure. So, if what you want me to say is that you should add a free JD for one more year of school, then yes, you should. Sure.

OP: as a serious response (if you actually wanted one), it's really easy for people to say, 20 years ago, man I wish I'd gone to law school, now that they already have enjoyed the time and money they would have otherwise spent on law school.

Was in the military right out of college, then finance. Got an MBA along the way. Now running my own small PE firm. Want to keep doing it for the long run. I am looking at a couple of state schools in my region and playing them off against each other in the hopes of getting a full ride, or close to it.

Some people have said, Oh, for the cost of law school, you could hire a lawyer for a lot of hours! First of all, the cost, even including the opportunity cost of 15 hours per week of schoolwork, is not all that high. Second of all, more importantly, I have never encountered a lawyer who truly cares about my legal issues as much as I do. I have no doubt that I can find some dude to go through the motions and milk the clock on the many legal matters that my deals generate, but I don't want that. I want someone who has a killer instinct, who will think outside the box and go above and beyond the call of duty to create the absolute best possible result for me. I think my best bet for finding that person is to become that person. Also, lots of the legal issues that I have involve relatively small amounts of money, and it wouldn't be cost effective to bring in an attorney at several hundred per hour to handle them.

Would rather not lay out my precise path. I didn't consider the joint degree at the time because I didn't see the value that the law degree would provide until later.

I definitely don't expect to get much practical knowledge out of law school itself, but I am planning to get some experience during law school by working with a family member who is a lawyer. Also, I have been dealing with real world legal issues for several years now, drafting my own contracts, researching statutes, etc.
