i think the cornell tech campus was a smart, and maybe even critical, play for them.
interest in farthest rural campuses is declining, and while you can probably continue to get away with it for a couple more decades for liberal arts colleges, cornell is trying to be science and tech relevant. that is going to mean, basically, presences, if in the US, in the bay area, nyc, boston, la, seattle, austin, chicago, and maybe dc and philly. if you aren't reasonably close enough to one of those places to have some kind of presence, you're going to get left behind.

Cornell's will improve its prestige because it gives them a whole new NYC campus.
Columbia's is basically just adding on to their existing campus, not really that big of a deal.
