SO got a job in Chicago and I'm looking to lateral. I'm a corp midlevel at a V20 firm in NYC.

Anyone have any insight on firms in Chicago? My main concerns are not getting paid below market and not getting Lathamed in the near future, so it seems like Kirkland may be the best option.

Thanks -- forgot about Jones Day.

I read on ATL that Sidley pays below market bonuses. Latham pays market or above but will probably Latham at the next sign of a slowdown. Seems like Mayer and Winston aren't doing so well, but I don't know. I don't know much about Jones Day or Skadden in Chicago.

Thanks, can you expand on why Latham Chicago is risky? Greater risk of Lathaming in Chicago than LA, NY or elsewhere?

Would definitely do K&E of these but the word is still out on their Houston experiment (and IMO they did not get quality hires)

Interesting, thanks. I know they are paying a lot for some partner hires, and were paying big signing bonuses for associates in Houston a year or two ago. You think a slowdown in Houston would affect the Chicago office? I heard they paid decent bonuses in 2014.

I have no clue if a slowdown in Houston would actually affect overall profits, it just seems like they've invested a lot of money in the Houston office. They have hired a lot of expensive laterals recently but yeah I think they paid out their normal above market bonuses this year.

Yeah they paid huge signing bonuses for Houston but I still don't think they hired many quality associates. My impression was that they just wanted bodies. I don't know as much about the partners though.

You mean it's difficult to lateral to Chicago? Why? I've talked to a few people that have moved there, and it seems like corp groups are busy enough some of the larger firms would have openings.

Any thoughts on Mayer Brown or Paul Hastings? PH appears to pay market bonuses. I know nothing about these firms otherwise.
