Not sure why bros this trying to "climb the corporate ladder" is a better idea. If anything, trying to climb the ladder is probably more difficult because of the various impediments that arise when working in a large organization that are totally out of your control.

At least with your own business, everything is within your control, and if things don't work out, it'll be a direct result of what you did or didn't do...not because some douchebag VP plays favorites and decided not to assign you to work on some major deal/campaign/project or whatever.

No, I read it just fine. If you're trying to make 7 figures, your chances of getting that are far greater starting your own business than trying to work your way up the ladder. Trying to make that climbing up the ladder is damn near impossible unless you suck thousands of cocks for like 20+ years.

Me? None, however, pretty much everyone I know that makes that kind of money or close to it got there via entrepreneurship, not corporate America BIGCORP.

There's just too much shit out of your control working in corporate America. Sure, you still have to network when you have your own business, but you have control over most things.

The other issue with climbing the corporate ladder is that once you get to a certain age, if you haven't really "maed it", you need to be really fearful of getting laid off. I'd be fucking paranoid being a middle manager at a F500 in my mid-50's making $400k per year or something. Feels too much like putting all my eggs in one basket.

If you're making $400k/year though you should be saving a large amount just in case. If you find yourself 56, laid off and with a few million in savings/securities/investments and another $500k-$1m or so in your house, then who cares? You can consult or find some cake job that will pay less but will still cover your expenses. You don't have student loans to pay and as long as you live like a normal person you'll be fine.

I'm not saying you shouldn't, but for an ambitious guy who is pretty successful, I'd hate having to watch over my shoulder for a layoff. And in your mid-fifties, you still have 10-15 productive years left, and if I were going to scale back I'd rather do it on my terms as opposed to someone else's.

Understood, but the alternative of running your own business isn't the holy grail that some are making it out to be. I knew someone that was in their 50s and their business failed. Just crapped out because a key factor that their entire business model depended on changed in a way that shut them down. That person ended up doing exactly what I wrote above and ended up taking a lower hours, lower paying job. Mind you, it is worse when it is your business since these guys often try to throw their own money into their sinking business to try to keep it afloat. With your F500 job, if you're out then you shrug and move on.

There is a huge gap in pay between upper-middle management and senior corporate officers.

a divisional vice president or "general manager" is making somewhere in the mid six-figures all in.

Several things including talent, having key people pulling for you and honestly, quite a bit of luck (a good spot opening up at the right point in your career, your specialties being exactly what they're looking for because of whatever reason, your name being dropped at the exact right time, etc.).

To something legit like CLO at a top place? Fuck no. But I do well and will continue to do well. The thing XO overlooks is that we don't NEED to make piles to be happy.

Law school -> Biglaw -> deal work in-house, yeah

That's similar to being an entrepreneur, though. Pretty sure the OP is talking about being a typical corporate drone.

Sales guys do make this, but it is never year after year. They'll maybe hit 1 million plus in the top 3 best years of their entire career.

It's harder to hit that level of achievement as you move up the chain. A sales manager has to completely blow out annual new revenue numbers for the entire organization to get $1 million +, whereas a sales rep just has to do well in his particular region.

One of my siblings is quite a bit younger than me, so when he was in boarding school, I spent a lot of time hanging out with the parents of his classmates on football weekends, when visiting the school, etc. Almost all of the fathers shelling out the 40+ grand for yearly tuition were entrepreneurs. In many cases, they were running family businesses. In terms of corporate employees, there were a couple of Wall Street guys, and just a handful of other guys who were employees of regular F500 companies. I later found that one of the corporate fathers was the son of a guy who was a very successful entrepreneur.

Kind of retarded.

When I have kids they will not be enrolled in any shit school, but will be learning the great lessons of their father's lifetime of bootstrapping.

For my next company I will start a new line of bootsraps that has my name embroidered on it.

I went to private school and my observation was the exact opposite. Out of all of the rich guys I was friends with, their dads were all big law partners, portfolio managers at some asset management firm or mutual fund, venture capitalists, or MDs in IB. Only one of my friends had a dad who owned a business. Didn't know a single "entrepreneur" aside from my own dad.

Most of the fathers of the kids at my prep school ($35k/yr) were entrepreneurs along with a sprinkling of BIGCORP/BIGLAW types.

Some of the ways they generated their wealth:

-check cashing stores

-clothing line

-real estate investments

-antiques

-small/medium size law practices

-financial planning/retirement planning biz

-HVAC products distribution

-medical practices

-mortgage company

-title insurance biz

Weird. Were most of these people from non-urban areas? I mean there were a handful of kids who had parents who were business owners, but most of them were just family businesses.

One of the teachers at my school had parents who owned (or owned part of) a F500 company. Easily the richest person there. Dude drove two BMWs despite being an english teacher.

We may have different concepts of the term entrepreneur. Law firm partners are business owners (assuming they are equity partners, not fake partners). Venture capitalists are business owners if they are partners in the VC firm.

Yeah I kind of viewed it as basically starting a company or taking over ownership of a company your parents started. I guess I don't really count partners at financial/law firms as "business owners" exactly because there's kind of a set framework they have to move through before they take over a stake of the company, as opposed to being on your own for the most part.

There's a company called Hoover's that provides info on companies over 50 people or so.

At the 500+ employee level they usually provide salary info for all C-level executives.

A company right around 500 usually has a few people over one million, a dozen or so un the $300k+ range.

A lower F500 has about 2 dozen over a million, and 50 or so in the 300k+ range

So, extrapolate that to larger f500s and there are probably 20,000 or so earning over $1 million in traditional big corporate jobs
