Churches don't provide any public service above and beyond the normal psychiatrist. There's no reason for them to be tax-exempt. This is particularly true where religious institutions are taking up very valuable property and can only afford to because they don't pay property taxes. That either increases my property tax rates or steals money from the schools. Yet, no one complains that churches are intolerant of me, or are intolerant of schools, even though they are directly robbing one of us.

Again, I'm not the one who feels I shouldn't owe taxes that support public schools. And somehow conservatives twist that so that I'm the one who hates people. If churches pay taxes, they can do whatever they want. The issue is that they want to both do whatever they want and not pay taxes.

brother, why do you think Churches, mosques, and synogogues should be taxed liked businesses, while the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, et al. should get non-profit status?

Or do you?

Are you actually comparing the current assets of the Catholic Church to those of the ACLU? My main beef is property taxes. ACLU, Planned Parenthood, conservative organizations that help people (there have to be some) all pay property taxes through their rent. The church owns the property. So, when you exempt it from property taxes, it now has an additional exemption above and beyond those organizations. Cute challenge though.

when I was in HS I worked at a church rectory and the amount of social services they ran would seem, at least to me, to offset tax exempt status on the premise that the government would want to promote those types of services. They ran a food pantry that people would use regularly, marriage (gasp, yes, straight) counseling, end of death counseling, legal referrals, temporary housing assistance, shit the priests even let homeless dudes eat dinner with them if they happened to be around, used clothing/jackets for the poor in the winter, run a school triple the quality of the local public school at likely cheaper per pupil expenditure, and so on. this tax talking point the left uses is fucking bullshit.

We are never going to agree. The fact that you are comfortable with a church run school blows my mind. That is a taxpayer disservice. What does conservatism even mean anymore?

The other stuff is generally provided to congregants who paid for the availability of the services. The churches I'm talking about have millions or tens of millions invested just in their own building. You don't get to keep all that for free just because you stick out a box for someone to donate winter clothes.

Texas gets more money from the FedGov than it pays in. You won't even get them to close one military base, much less secede.

Churches run an insane amount of social services. Plus, it's not like every church is a st. peter's basilica like improvement sitting on land in Manhattan. Most churches are modest buildings in the middle of ARE country.

Op is flaming arrow who should gas himself. Churches benefit the community in a wide variety of ways, from running orphanages, to food pantries, to employment assistance to providing meeting places for groups such as the boy scouts and alcoholics anonymous, to building houses for the elderly, to paying utility bills for the indigent. Just because you have never set foot in one because your entire identity is wrapped up in having a cock shoved in you ass doesn't mean they don't do a tremendous amount of good.

Literally every item you named could be done better and more efficiently by the government, and it's not even close. This is a laundry list of what the government/big purchasing power does well.

I think you live in bum fuck nowhere. Everywhere I've lived has a payment program for energy bills, special housing provisions for the elderly, etc.

Roe v Wade was issued before there was a solid political base for it, and even Ginsburg says it caused massive backlash across decades.

With SSM, there is overwhelming political support among the younger generations. I don't predict the backlash will be as lasting as with Roe v Wade.

180. the governor of indiana couldn't even throw them a consolation prize (making it easier for state courts to throw out nondiscrimination ordinances) without backing down like a little bitch within the span of less than a week by inserting language specifying that the law in question specifically could NOT be used to do that.
