Probably because most t14 law students major in stuff like English/Poli Sci/Philosophy during ugrad, and unless you attended a top ugrad and had at least a 3.5 gpa, you probably don't have many employment options available. As a result, law school is the best option available for most

This is generally the case at lower t14 schools (Gtown/Cornell/D00k) since most t6 students had other options available but opted for law instead.

I went to a t6 at the height of the real estate bubble. Trust me, very few students had great options. The most common pre-law job was teacher in a shit city/district. It's mostly poli sci shitheads.

Most T6 grads I know had good jobs prior to law school in banking, advertising, brand management, etc. I can't think of any who had zero options and just applied to law school on a whim. However, the majority of the T6 grads I know went to top 10-15 ugrads so perhaps that's why the majority of them had solid options prior to law school.

Consulting

Biglaw paralegal

Some entry level position at a F500

Decent non-profit gigs

Decent govt gigs

Decent advertising/marketing gigs

Possibly banking with some serious effort on their part (enough networking to land an interview and enough knowledge to sound competent in a banking interview)

I'm not sure that I can name a worse job than Biglaw paralegal. It combines all the negatives of junior associate with mediocre pay, more repetitive work, and fewer exit options. It's particularly baffling to me when I see a candidate who went to Ivy undergrad, worked as a Biglaw paralegal, went to law school, and is now interviewing for Biglaw again. What are they thinking about when they don't look for a way out of Biglaw after the paralegal stint?

I've never come across a HYS law student/grad who had no other decent option aside from law school at HYS.

You need to realize that pretty much everyone at HYS had a 3.7+ in ugrad (with many in the 3.85-4.0 range) which means they were one of the top students in ugrad. With that being the case, even if they attended some shitty ugrad, they should have been able to land something solid out of ugrad. Local companies/businesses have to hire from somewhere and grads of elite colleges only want to work for the top companies which leave many positions at lesser companies available.

I knew plenty at my HYS. S and Y in particular loves military vets, TFA alumni, people who started their own nonprofit, etc. In other words, people who did stuff that sounds prestigious on a resume but isn't a real career. And plenty of people were doing bullshit nonprofit work because they were poli sci shitheads who couldn't find anything better.

I don't consider non-profit work "bullshit." Just because a job isn't "prestigious" and doesn't get everyone's clit enlarged or dick hard doesn't mean it's a shit job.

TFA is flame but agreed that non-profit work isn't a bad job. Plenty of attorneys would go back in time and take a $50k non-profit gig instead of going to law school. At least you can help people once in awhile.

Law school is a good equalizer.

If you're a rich well connected dude you don't go to law school. Many law students are just smart kids who didn't have connections to get good jobs.

Look, we make 6x the average wage to push paper instead of check people out at Home Depot or other shit.

The problem is it doesn't feel like we make the money becase the greedy law schools take our earnings in return for nothing.
