It impacts your budget.

You can rent a two bedroom luxury condo or a townhouse in trolley square, lease an entry level luxury car, dine at one of the three fine restaurants in town once a week, maybe joins middling country club all as a first year.

If you live more frugally initially and save for a down payment, as a third year, you can buy a lovely five bedroom house in the highlands.

If you end up with another lawyer or other highly paid professional, as senior associates, you could afford an estate.

do you have any sense of what life is like as midlevel at one of the big DE firms (sounds like you might be one)?

Ranges from New York hours and New York style work, but with a more polite attitude, to more relaxed old school delaware counsel work.

What type of work also matters. Restructuring is quite slow now but can be crazy, chancery work is booming as always and has a propensity to be insane levels of work in spurts, IP has slowed, there is not much transactional work around, some firms do general lit which tends to be more chill.

brother, NOBODY in biglaw should be doing this shit. none of this shit. live like a pauper, rack up as much money you can, invest dat shit, and move on with your life at a lower-paying job after a few years.

i can't imagine blowing money on models and bottles as an associate and having nothing to show for it when i'm pushed out at year 6.

A luxury condo is $1500-2000 a month. I am not sure that the extra $500 over a normal place is make it or break it.

Even doing all those things, you are still saving a good bit of money.

yeah, i guess i agree on that one.

however, $500/mo for 5 years, assuming a 7% return, will be a bit over $200k in 30 years. food for thought, BRoTHER.

Mid level could buy for $580k for a 5 bed, 7 bath, 5500 square foot house in a very nice neighborhood.

You would need to be DINKS to buy an estate, but 10 acres and Norman estate for $1.5m as opposed to a one bedroom in MFH.

And the DLA office is actually pretty good, they have a decent home grown chancery litigator, picked up another great one from a V10 and a top notch restructuring guy who came from a different V10.

The highlands, the area out 52 and 100 into Greenville and Centerville, and the area near hoopes are some of the nicest areas in the country.

Yes. However, there are very well-defined areas that are bad (terrible, maybe worse than Camden), and then a few blocks away it is the downtown, and then a mile away there are nice areas with no crime.

crime in wilmington is really, really, REALLY bad, and it doesn't always stay confined to its confines. this story was from TODAY:

That area is pretty bad. No lawyer would ever go there. No lawyer goes anywhere other than the riverfront, market, king and french between the train station and 14th or so, and out delaware ave and a couple blocks north and south.

Flip a coin as both are run like New York firms. Big summer classes, forced attrition, hard (but not New York hard) to make partner.

MNAT for bankruptcy, but close (and other firms also good)

MNAT for IP and not close at all
