Aren't we just limiting ourselves by picking from the group of people who self-selected as "politicians"?

Oh, without a doubt, any good merit system would prevail over elections. Then the difficulty is designing an acceptable merit system.

But I think it's arguable that even random would be preferable to elected.

random would clearly be better, as the US Senate is now an oligarchy tightly selected and controlled by finance, corporates and AIPAC.

perhaps random among those with no police records and a positive net worth

randoms would be bought up very quickly, you'd have to create some kind of ruling class immune to the appeals of commerce, so essentially aristocracy, who were just randoms chosen by birth

a civil service exam/promotion system would be best. provided it was actually objective and wasn't corrupted.

civil service promotion + limited terms = tcr.

that's preferable to what we have now. the british empire ran its colonies to some extent on this basis, and it worked well.

with disinterested third parties at the helm, a pure technocracy sounds unbearable, just faggot perfect rule following behavior endlessly rewarded

Have a laundry list of basic competence (IQ, no huge debt vs income, healthy, etc).

Select a few dozen or so for each office. Have people vote on the top hundred or so policy questions and have each answer them.

Have some debates.

Then let the people vote.

Pay those elected a few million bucks or so and then impose a special tax if they earn more than 300k/year afterwards to limit their ability to be bought or promised lobbyist jobs etc.

You have to have some basic competence with procedural shit. In many respects it is (or should be) a very practical job.
