Any lawyer rating system is going to suck in some ways, but things that weigh heavily on your score, like presentations and publications, at least have some relationship to experience/competency.

I just said they bear some relationship, which I think is true. I'm not defending the Avvo rating system as a good way to choose an attorney.

Who am I? The CEO of Avvo? I don't know why they chose to make it that way, but those are definitely components that affect your Avvo score.

so providing searchable and linkable content - i.e. click bait.

You are not the Avvo CEO, but if the rating system is so secretive I am not sure you can discount payola.

Searchable, sure, I guess. Linkable? Not really, I don't think.

Although Avvo has been known/rumored to engage in various SEO skullduggery.

Here's what they say about their system: http://www.avvo.com/support/avvo_rating

Edit: turns out client reviews don't affect your Avvo rating, but peer endorsements do. I think that might be a new change.

adwords works out better and getting the top ads on avvo is expensive, theres a waiting list, usually they just shake u down for like $100 a month for shit that gets u like 1-2 contacts a month, its SPS... the richest solos in ur area usually have already boughten out the top ads and get most of the referrals from that shit site

Thanks for the info. I'm in a fairly similar practice area to you. Any advice you could share on getting clients? Adwords has had mixed results.

My primary source of clients are online and referrals from other attorneys. These days, I've got enough work to keep me as busy as I want to be, so I've been turning down small fry clients.

Avvo was definitely a good source for me starting out, both by answering questions and by paying $100/mo for a sponsored listing when people search certain practice areas in my location. When answering questions, you just have to accept that most people are on there for free advice, but every once in a while someone will follow up who can actually pay for legal services.

Another great source of business is your state/county bar association's solo or small firm section (if they have one). Other solos like referring to other solos, and if your practice area is similar to mine, then you're probably not competing with 1000 other wills/divorce/DUI solos.

A combo of Avvo sponsored listings, answers to Avvo questions, having my name listed on sites dealing with copyright trolls, and some Google AdWords ads. Presumably I get some organic traffic to my website too, but I don't really track that like I originally intended to.
